Official Forum has limited access?

I have connected today to the Official Fryrender Forum and I have realised that only if you have paid for the program you can access inside the website.

What a pity.:(

I think they make a mistake if they want to penetrate and compete against the stablished competence: Maxwell. If they want to make a little hole in the gained community of Maxwell they have to grant the minimum access to the foreign community...Otherwise...

I don't know why but it's a bit suicide all this strategy.

I hope they know what they do.

Regards.

Read-only? This will be to some areas...Not in all areas.:o

A few days ago I couldn't entry in any section...Was it my problem? Or not? What I know is that now I can entry in some sections...

If you consider that my information is wrong I don't want this thread still remains beacuse my announce is false. The last thing I want to do is damage Fryrender. So if you can delete my thread...I think this will adjust more to the actual reality.

Regards.

Yes, there are forums that only people with registered licenses have access to. Anyone can register to the forum, but access is restricted and it is read-only unless you are a licensed user.

If you have registered to the forum and could not access any of it, then the site could have been temporarily down. If it was a login issue and it would not accept your login info, you could try deleting your cookies and trying again.

I think that the issue of official forum access is open to valid questions. If you change your topic title to something like, "Why can't I access the official fryrender forum?" then I don't see where the topic is inappropriate. Whereas you have a strong opinion on the subject, I don't see where it could be considered offensive.

Chaos Group does a similar thing. The problem for Chaos is that so many people steel their software, and then come around asking for help learning how to use it, or help with a problem. This both lowers the quality of help they can provide to paying customers, and lessons the time they have to develop their product. So it may be frustrating to someone simply seeking to learn more, but in reality, it actually makes their product better, because you can get focused attention from the actual developers.

Yes, as Travis has pointed out, it is common practise for official software forums to limit access and read/write ability to licensed users to reduce administrative costs, to better focus on customer inquiries, and to prevent harrassing posts from people with nothing better to do.

I've edited the topic title.

  • 2 months later...

While I agree non-customers should not be allowed to POST in an official forum like Fryrender's, I can't see any good reason why they would be banned from READING some areas...

For instance, I am going through frustrating times with the Fryrender Rhino plug-in (see my thread), and I can't access the Fryrender forum's area dealing with this subject.

I guess that everyone trying out the software will have questions pertaining the specific plug-in for their modeling package.

I'm even convinced that most of the problems that new demo users will encounter will be related to the plug-ins, so why hide the place where they would find usefull help ?

I have lots of sympathy for Fryrender, but I found them to be sometimes clumsy in their relationship with potential customers :

-The whole "no demo in beta stage" thing was my first disappointment.

-The hardware key... thanks god, they got rid of this thing !

-The ambiguity around their virtual reality engine.

If the renders didn't kick that much ass, I would be discouraged by now.

Fran, your renders are probably the reason why I'm still giving them a chance.

Cheers,
