New to the Industry

Hi guys,

So i am definitely what you would describe a 'newbie' to this industry.

I've started working for a 3D Visualization company located downtown Toronto as a Marketing and Sales Specialist.

Although I have background in Marketing and Business Development, I defiintely don't have any background in the 3D Visualization world (except some 3Ds Max scripting + animation courses during college...which was YEARS ago!). However, coming from a Creative Marketing background, I am an absolute fan of all art forms (the 3D Visualization world has always impressed me!).

So, needless to say that I will be using this forum as a means of learning about the industry in hopes that it will aid me to become a superstar at my new position :).

So any suggestions/comments/insights that can be offered would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers!

I would suggest a little reading on the history of architectural photography.

There is also a thread here somewhere of 'Favourite 3d firms' or something like that (do a search) which is chock full of links to great arch-viz companies. Checkout their galleries and ask yourself why you like the images that attract your attention.

Other than that, just talk to your new colleagues, the artists themselves.

Any specific questions, feel free to ask.

Tom.

Thanks for the insight Tom. I will definitely fire away any questions I may have.

Kim,

Considering that your position is marketing and sales, I bet your supervisor would be most interested in having you generate some good sales leads quickly. The Toronto market was really hot until recently. Things there are starting to slow down. That might be why you were hired to begin with :)

I took a look at your website. The work is very nice and you have some great Toronto clients. My suggestion to you is to establish a clear marketing & sales focus quickly. You need to determine who your ideal clients are and where they might be located.

My "secret" advice to you is to not waste time targeting local real estate developers and ad agencies. They are probably scrambling now and might be difficult to pin down on new projects. You should focus on the clients that are in industries that don't fluctuate too much and that can be easily serviced. For example, I would target large architecture firms that are relatively near you (Toronto, Chicago, Philly) that have clients all over the world and who's projects are institutional or commercial.

Good Luck!!

Thanks for the feedback + advice Eddie. I've been doing a lot of research on the Toronto market, and it sounds as though you've hit the nail right on the head.

I appreciate your insight and I will definitely take this into serious consideration.

PS - Thanks for the positive comments on our work. I've actually visited your site a couple of times, and am a big fan :)...
