ronll
Other than as a user viewing it on the web, I have not explored the full potential of Google Earth. I know that third parties can build building models and somehow have them included on the site, but is there a way that one can build hypothetical buildings and view them in the Google Earth context? In other words, can I white-model a high-rise and place it at a given city location and then have my clients view it with Google Earth? And would it also show the other 3d buildings in the city that are already included in Google Earth? Is there a fee to Google to do this?
Ky Lane
Google broken? I did a search some months ago and found a prog that converted max models to multiverse models for placement in GE and it worked OK. It was a complex model, and GE didnt render it that well, but it was viewable all right.
quizzy
download Sketchup and import your max-objects in sketchup through 3ds or obj. Use sketchup to place your model in GE. This is what I came up with using this workflow: http://www.3idee.nl/sf/utrecht5.kmz (if it saves as .zip file rename the extension to .kmz)
Chad Warner
I've done the same thing as Quizzy. It works pretty well.
SandmanNinja
Does it cost money? A subscription or something? And I assume no one else "sees" the model unless they have the the KMZ file? Just checked out your model Quizzy - very cool! I like the text pop-ups, but I can't read it. It's like it's in a different language or something... Chad Warner
You have to pay for sketchup, and the third party would have to have the KMZ file.
SandmanNinja
Thanks mate. I never caught the Sketch-up bug - my mind is a single processor, and if I start throwing new things in there while I'm still mucking with 3ds, I'd go bonkers. ronll
Google broken? I realize you have a smiley face on that, yet just because the world now has Google, is there no need to talk to each other anymore? Thanks to all for the input. Michiel, that is exactly what I was looking for and thanks for including the link to your model. It really helped me quickly understand the process and how it can be useful for my client.
