File Link manager Is a Pain in the arse

Why does the file link manager decide to either explode the model or ignore most of the layers. I must have updated the model 20 times today and no problems but Max seems to know when i am importing for the last time before i render overnight. The same thing has happened on the last three nights. Are the CG gods just talking the piss. I now have to re-apply all the materials and fix the uvw's all over again. MAX SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alas, if it were only so simple as user error.

Importing when it is saving was my first tought but it cant be that as the same DWG file imports perfectly into a new max scene.

I have saved the dwg with a different name and vesion and still no joy. In fact it is worse now because instead of an explodedd model I am getting nothing, all my layers are empty. It doesn't matter whether i am relaoding the dwg or linking it again, the dwg does not want to appear in this particular max file.

HELP! please?

Thanks Lost

The model is centered on the origin. Unfortunatley I dont have time to import the model piece by piece. I need to get an image out today. I'll play around with it over the weekend.

The adventure continues!

I have this problem often.

OK, when Max explodes the model, quit from Max without saving. (I usually save before trying to relink).

Quit your AutoCAD file and then run a file recovery on it. Save your CAD file.

Boot up Max, reload your Max file and try re-linking the file again.

Usually works for me!

Irony.... I questioning a possible user error and then I get slapped in the face with the same problem.

I'm working with someone in a seperate office who is doing the modeling for a project in FormZ and I'm doing the lighting and rendering in 3dsMax. The file link periodically fails, and when it does it is bringing the layers in with a "_0" tagged onto the end of the name and dropping the materials.

What we found is when you save out your DWG, do not overwrite an existing file. Either delete the old file before saving and save out the new file with the same name, or save the new DWG with a new filename and repoint the file link at the new file, then all is well.

I would love to blame this on FormZ, but I'm not sure without knowing what programs others are authoring their DWG's in and running into problems as well.

I have used file link really almost for everything occasionally saw stuff scattered but very rare.

and it was easy to fix...

hope things come together for you
