What's Wrong with my Settings???Arrrggghh

Ok I'll start at the begining

Final Gather

300 FGpoint - too high, try 150

Diffuse bounces 0, when using photon (GI) all bounces above 0 ar discarded, FG is used to cleanup and smooth the photon soloution and shoot skylight

Photons

Max num. / sample 8000 is crazy, try 1500 or less

Max sampling radius - try 1 meter and either increase or decrese as needed.

Lights,

I see there a 5 lights , 2 shadow mapped and 3 raytraced. For this scence try using just a mrsun and sky system and a portal light in the window

Reflections, 4 reflections can take a while to render , try 2 most of the time this should be OK.

I would highly recomend reading the help files to get a better understanding of what these settings do.

For your machine I would expect rendertimes around 10 minutes, less with a bit of tweeking.

your exposure and gamma are fine,

what resolution are you rendering to?

To help speed up the renders, calculate the photons and FG at half the final res and image sampling at 1/64, 1/64. Saving the fg and Photons to file. Then Freeze the fg and re-render to full res and full image sampling.

good luck

quite simple really, and will save you time in the long run

set the image resolution to 900x1200

image sampling to the lowest for both min and max (1/64)

set a path and file name for the final gather and have "read/write to file" ticked, same for Photons

render the image, the final gather and photons are calculated and saved to disk.

after render

set the image resolution to 1800x2400

image sampling to min 1 Max 16

Final Gather set BOTH "read/Write to file" AND "Freeze"

render the image

the final gather and photns will be loaded from file and renderding with start straight away.

Calculating FG and Photons at a lower res is quicker and uses less memory than calculating at full image res. Just dont go too low.

Justin is the man.

When this deadline is over and done with, I'd encourage you to go to http://www.mentalboutmax.com and get Bri's video tutorials. They are incredibly affordable and will teach you everything you need to know about Mental Ray.

Start with the How To series and his mrSun tutorial is great, too.

I just got his most recent 2 videos on controlling colour bleed.

max number of photons per sample should never be over about 200.

your only firing 12000 photons per light. thats tiny.. get it up in the hundreds of thousands.

EDIT - we see a lot of threads here along the lines of "what's wrong with my settings". it is far better to learn to understand what all the values in MR mean and affect and diagnose the problem yourself. someone telling you what numbers to pump in doesn't really help you in the long run.

Absolutly, most of the time I try to give some sort of explination as to why I suggest certain settings. In this case seeing such a tight deadline I kind of skimmed over this. The help files are chock full of very valuble information and the tutorials that ship with Max are a great place to start. I also highly recommend Brians dvd's as he goes well beyond the usual "use this and this" type of information.

How did you end up, a large part of learning is sharing and feed back, even if it turns out crap:D
