Error when merging an obj

Well, this one has me stumped. I have a very low poly scene and now when I'm trying to merge in a chair max decides to crash. I've tried merging this file into other scenes and it works fine.

I've tried a few things:

- deleting everything in the scene and then importing and it still crashes.

- merging the scene into a new one and then adding with no luck.

- importing other objects and some work and some don't.

Here's a SS of the error. Any help/troubleshooting would be appreciated

Hi

I will try to open the chair file, re-apply the materials, make sure nothing else is in the file, do a garbage collection ( press F11 and type gc "" until the number doesn't get down anymore) save it and then try to merge it again

Or make sure it is not the file that you are try to merge to, at the moment. just to make sure, merge that one as well into a new document.

Hope it works:o

great tips, Adriana!

I can't tell from the screen shot, but I ALWAYS merge my objects GROUPED. So, I go to the source file, group it, save it, then bring it in grouped.

I tell it to automatically rename any texture that I have not named uniquely.

That's pretty much it. If it still craps out, then it's either the source file or the new scene.

Thanks for the help guys. I've taken your advice and have been working on troubleshooting. I have narrowed the error down since yesterday. It seems that I can work fine as long as I'm in wireframe mode (merge in whatever I want, render, or move anything around), but when I switch to smooth shading and view those objects in a window it crashes. Could it be a material preview error? Thanks again!

Edit: After viewing some other threads I figure posting some of the Hardware specs couldn't hurt

Intel Quad CPU 2.4 GHz

4 GB RAM

Nvidia 8800 GT video card

This scene is using 3D Studio Max 9

I'm going to see if we have the latest video card drivers installed next.

When you said that it was fine in wireframe mode, but crashes otherwise.... That tells me it's something to do with the video. Your card is good, so it's either the driver or the video mode you're running (OpenGL or DirectX).

If you didn't know this, click on Start -> Run and type dxdiag and hit enter.

A box will pop up with info. It'll give you driver versions and all kinds of stuff.
