somebody knows there IES files haha, it is a commonly used one i know but i'm just practising

Underexposed??? I shall make a few ammendments. But if you went downstairs in the middle of the night and flicked the kitchen light on, you really think it would illuminate more than that??

i guess it kinda looks like a film noir style although that is not what i was aiming for, will try and do one properly exposed, just rendering out a daylight version with camera in same position to do a comparison.

i've been learning vray recently so thought i better keep dabbling with mental ray so i don't lose what i have learnt already.

also trying to incorporate GI with my FG as i only ever used to use FG for interiors.

when this daylight one is finished, i'm going to have another crack at the night one, its weird tho because i am using fg and GI i end up having to use unrealistic exposure values otherwise it is far too bright.

in the night scene i had it exposed on the night time default and it looked good, then i turned on gi and now the EV value is set to 11, weird

cheers or the comments guys, just re-working the night shot then will post a render. As far as settings go in that render, then its just photometric lights

FG on medum preset, with 1 bounce

GI enabled, with 200000 average GI photons per light ad also optimized for final gather enabled.

Mr photographic exposure control is on with an EV = 11 (which i know is unrealistic, it should be more like EV=2 which it is with just FG, but when i enable GI i have to change it around 11 otherwise everything is superbright, any ideas why guys??)

everything else is pretty much default apart from a few changes made to sampling and spatial contrast and filters.

i think i found my problem, when i first brought in the web file, it had a resulting intensity of around 8500cd, i now have my EV value set at 3.5, so what would a good cd intensity be now for this, at the minute it is at around 60 which is looking ok but would this be about right ?

It looks nice to me. daveb867 could you be so kind as to tell me what kind of lights you are using and other details than what you have already posted?

I ask because I have not found a MR tutorial or example scene showing how to set up an interior with no external light like a basement or night time room like this one.

cheers guys, when i finish texturing it up i will post screenshots with all settings. it should be good, because i am just rendering a view from upstairs with blue led's in the roof and they have come out quite well.

will keep you updated guys, and i will share my settings once it is complete and they are final

just another quick update, not getting much time to work on this but i just wanted to get rid of my one diffuse bounce because the more i look at the update before this one, the more i think its a little bit to bright, and the light in the scene is travelling a little bit to far.

just thrown in some furniture to liven it up a bit, oh and i've begun decorating, only painted the walls so far :)

Here's some tips on Web Distribution Files:

a D65 light is almost pure white

a D50 is a warmer light, very much like a standard incandestic bulb

Too dark? Increase the candles of the light

Using mrPhotographic settings on the Environment panel, play with the shutter speed and ISO film speed

setup your scene physically. GI will help this scene no end. don't trust the candela value of your IES file when it comes in to max - A common candle emits roughly 1 cd. A 100 W incandescent lightbulb emits about 120 cd.
