uh, well I tried executing that command from Maya's scipt editor and it never worked. Then I tried from OSX terminal and it couldn't find imf_copy. So I went into Alias/maya6.5/imf_disp and opend it up. I was able to open my jpg and export as .map. I changed the ext on my texture node and re-rendered. It worked, No warning in the Reder Diagnosis.

There is a brilliant mel script on the site I've linked below. It creates and opens a dialog box that has a few great texture time savers - convert all file textures to *.map, gamma correct all file textures to 2.2 or 1.8 and more. ;)

I've attached it below and included the xpm file for your shelf icon (My Docs/maya/6.5/prefs/icons) Put the script into (My Docs/maya/6.5/scripts) To get it running, if my memory serves correctly, you need to source the script then type the following into your script editor...

toi_textureTools();

You can also drag that command to your shelf and then set up the new shelf button with the icon I included. You might want to back up your preferences first, just to be safe although I've checked the mel script and it seems to be version free. If you want to be extra sure, visit the site below (it seems they're overhauling the site this weekend, maybe check on Monday)
