RyanSpaulding
Hey all, In a few days I'll be switching jobs to be a Web Graphic Specialist at Erdman, a healthcare design/build firm. I just wanted to give a big thank you to everyone that helped me hone my skills in this field the last 5 years. I couldn't have done it without you guys. CGA was instrumental in my skill level and success. I'm leaving the field due to a complete lack of 3d viz work. As some may remember, I switched from a renderer job about 6 months ago due to a lack of projects (about 1-2 hotels a month) to an in-house position at a reputable firm. The end result of this switch was less work (0 'final' renders) in 6+ months at this position. Waiting for work has somewhat soured me to the field, has halted my developmental progress in 3DStudio Max and has broken my spirit a bit. I just need some time away from it all. I plan to pick up small freelance 3d projects, working on non-architectural 3d work, and I'll be working on my hi-res 3D people for arch viz under my company's moniker, Graphic Acrobatics...so I'm not so much saying goodbye as I am saying see you later. I'll definitely be back to get feedback on that project. And I'll drop by from time to time I'm sure. So, with that, I'll catch you all on the flipside. - Ryan

Jim Mann
Good luck in your new role! Unfortunately, unless things improve soon, you will be one of the first of very many to leave the industry. Lets hope things get better sooner rather than later. Jim

RyanSpaulding
I wish you all the best Ryan, did I read your post right did you say in 6 months at a firm you didn't do one rendering? Thanks to all for the responses. And yes, I did some light spacial stuff...but nothing that came to fruition. As much as I wanted to, there just wasn't enough work to support a 2nd 3d artist on staff.
Sawyer
I am sure you are looking at what is best and unfortunately I am sure you wont be the last. Hell some of my best clients seem to be considering closing their doors... Take a deep breath and be glad you have something you can move onto. EddieLeon
As the Dow drops another 500 points today I am beginning to wonder where this is all heading. So far, I feel very fortunate that there is plenty of work to keep us busy. I also see that there are still many projects out there for all of us. How long will they last? I have no clue. All I can really say is that we all need to keep the faith and keep working harder and smarter. There are solutions to every problem and economic downturns always have a silver lining. Ryan, Things will eventually turn around and you will be back. Enjoy the break and don't get rusty
Tim Nelson
Good luck Ryan! I know how ya feel. I went back on my own in May. For the last six weeks I have hardly worked at all. Of course, today I found myself working a 15 hour day. So I guess either way its a stressful business to be in. I should have gone into healthcare. Tim Fairbanks
We don't "know" each other Ryan, but good luck from me as well. I've appreciated your posts. The A&E firm I work for just let 19 people go this morning, following the 15 architects, engineers & techs that were laid-off in June. The layoffs this morning included one of our own 3D artists. There are now 2 of us left, and we will very likely be unemployed by the end of the year if the economy stays on its current vector. I didn't even know what to say this morning when I said goodbye to three people who I'll probably never see again. Very hard to offer them words of consolation and hope, knowing what they, and we, are going to be facing in the near future. Good luck to all of us, I suppose. We're going to need it. fadi3d
Well the fact is dreams change as well as the economic situations. for twen'y five years i tried to change but life is nothing but a who** the dreams i had they were rearranged till they crashed like waves upon the shore... yep i dreamed of writing songs and "Great" music, a long time ago.and even now 3d is just a side job (i am a toy and stationary salesman) but i'll get back to music one day (as soon as i "master" my 3d technique... what i want to say is that if ur passionate enough about something, u will get back to it. Ryan, good luck and hang on to ur dreams.

Just becuase you are leaving visualization doesn't mean you have to leave the forums. Stop by and say hi from time to time at least.

AFK_Matrix
I don't know you personally Ryan but I wish you all the luck in your new job. I too have done something similar and started my new job on Monday. Basically I was working for a Housing company here in the UK and had come to a point where my skills weren't being pushed etc. I left there last August, travelled a bit got a temporary job to see me through and have now found this job. Basically I am now going to be a Database Modelling Instructor for Flight simulators belive it or not lol. They are going to be using a new system which uses models produced from Maya and a lot of other things and they need someone to learn all this and then teach it. I originally thought the interview was just for doing the 3D models of airports etc but found out about the training in the interview lol. So I will still be involved with modelling but not doing the modelling, the company is a huge international one thus I hope there is some security here. I really hope you enjoy your new job and keep up ur 3D skills so you still have the option to come back!!! Good Luck.

And for future reference, the largest concentration of Sim companies is in Central Florida. http://www.simulationinformation.com
