3DSMAX5 vs VIZ4

I liked VIZ4 because of it's radiosity capabilities and the DWG file link manager. but now that MAX5 also has radiosity (and better and faster than the one of VIZ4) the only thing better of VIZ is the FILE link feature and the price, but if discreet release a FILE link for max 5 as they did with max 4... I don't see any future in VIZ. What should be next in VIZ 5? :p

why dont update Viz4 with same radiosity solution and the other render (like vray & final render) like max5. maybe this make better Viz4 than Max5.

only thing i dont agree of Viz4 r the poor texture features , they dont have animation .

how can i make a pool, or whatefall. a fire with textures, etc etc.

we need Viz 4.5 :) or max 5 ??? for the price i like more viz4

I like max over viz, because it's not so specific to architecture. Max got a videopost and more animatable parameters, but viz got some nice tools like the railing tool. It looks like neither is really 100%. I hope max5 got a railing tool too... :)

in fact i already started developing a viz4-style-but-better railing script, but the problem is that MXS4 doesn't support scripted creation of compound objects (loft) and bevel profile.

that makes things hard to impossible, in this case. there is a workaround, but i'll wait for max5 before i start coding. i hope they implemented loft there.

Hi Quizzy and Mark,

 

I've started scripting a reailing tool myself (before I knew viz had one...) but got stuck also. My idea was not to use a bevel profile or a loft, but a simple bevel or a rendered line.

The rendered line works fine, but as there is no 'outline spline' available in scripting in max3,I quit the whole idea - loads of analytical math formulas trying to achieve the outline spline - after I've read in the manual that viz does haven an outline spline feature available in scripting. Tell me I was disappointed!

So maybe if someone can 'copy' this feature from viz to max, we can all be happy...

Let me correct one thing. The Radiosity in MAX 5 is the same as in VIZ 4. The only difference is Adaptive Sampling Regather. There's no other difference. Regather maybe a little bit faster, but the rest remains unchanged.

 

The secondary Advanced Lighting plugin (called Light Tracer) is a non-photometric solution that only works well for Sky renderings. It's not suited for computing light bounces, although you can do so. Light Tracer is also view dependant, which means if you're rendering an animation it needs to reprocess the GI solution at every frame.

 

There are a lot more unique tools to VIZ 4 than just File Link. VIZ 4 has RPC, Panoramic Generator, AEC Plugins, Lighting Data Export, Print Wizard, Substitution, etc.

Check this out...Found on http://www.turbosquid.com 's forum

 

"..well get a hands on look at the radiosity/GI by going to www.autodesk.com and filling in the form for the demo version of viz4 also note that you can copy the dll's dlo's etc over with the new viz to max utilty and enable radiosity in max 4.2 you also get the parametric:wall stairs, trees and lumiares this should enable you to use radiosity in max 4.2 but not set textures with individual rad settings just an overall rad setup for the scene.

it's coome about so you can load viz4 radiosity scenes into max 4.2

also note viz 4 has a new raytracer...

 

this should give you a good feel for what will be in max 5

so you can then decide wether to go for BRAZIL or wait for max 5..

Honestly, copying the VIZ DLLs to MAX 4 will NOT give you a good feel of the program.

 

As it's mentioned in the Readme and information in the Discreet website, the radiosity system will NOT contain all features. For instance, you will NOT have object properties, which is very important for setting up good radiosity.

 

If you want to compare, just ask your dealer for a demo copy of MAX 5. It will run for 30 days in trial mode.
