classix
Autosaves of multiple simultaneous Max sessions do override each other. While rendering in one session a second session overrides my autosave files. http://www.einherzfuerpixel.de
Tim Fairbanks
Yes, that is correct, and has been "feature" (sarcasm intended) of 3dsmax for a long time. One of my colleagues was just ranting about max's inability to open multiple scenes in one session. Since your 3dsmax preferences (3dsmax.ini) can only direct max to Autosave files to one location, each 3dsmax session writes files to the same location. Presumably it looks at the most recent file save time, and saves a new incremental file. This would make it appear that it is "saving over" your AutoSave file. I supppose it might be possible to to circumvent this process by creating different 3dsmax configurations, and loading different 3dsmax.ini files that Autosave to different locations or filenames for each session.... Personally, I've never been motivated enough to try, even though the problem is a hassle, especially when dealing with xref's & linked files. Just be aware that it will happen and ONLY use two simultaneous sessions when absolutely necessary. TimF
tecton3d
first thought, rename one of the files ...just a thought but couldn't you dual install MAX to avoid this (assuming you directed the .ini files to different locations respectively ... and it doesn't start a slew of license issues)? Crazy Homeless Guy
I would like a feature like this also. I often have 3 different Max files open. I might have the site, the building, and maybe another project all open at the same time. If I crash before I have saved updates I might or might not be out of luck. it is a crap shoot. ivorip
You can use the attached maxscript to switch autobackup filename. Usage: Add button to menu/toolbar with customize. Its listed under the "Glo" category -> Multi_Autosave I have not found any maxscript interface to detect the number of running max instances, if anybody knows, I can add that as a detect routine. Peter M. Gruhn
I wonder if virtual machines would help y'all.
Ricardo Eloy
If I get this correct, it's already possible. Since Max 2008 (or was it 9?), you have the Set Project Folder feature, so you can work on different files/projects without overriding autobacks. I use it all the time. Crazy Homeless Guy
I never got into project folders. In fact, I disable the user profiles as well. Questions, when using project folders, do you have the ability to work on multiple projects at once? I am likely to be running multiple instances of Max, and doing things on two projects as I am to be running multiple instances of Max, and be working on different parts of the same project. ivorip
I think he meant in the same Project, he uses multiple files within the folder structure at the same time. So the Project autosave folder would be the same. The script I wrote assumes you want to keep the name as Autoback.bak But what can be done is if you want the autosave file to match the opened files savefile. E.g. Site.max creates Autoback_site.max building.max creates autoback_building.max Edited August 13, 2009 by ivorip

Ok, I have the installed. I launch it, and it gives me a session dialog. I am not sure what to do from there. Do I assign a session to the instance I have open? ivorip
Solution #1 Choose the session# and it'll change the autosave filename to the sessions# ----------------------------- Solution #2 It'll register a function that changes the autosave filename to opened filename, Put the attached script in C:\program files\autodesk\3ds max 20XX\script\startup ----------------------------- Edited August 13, 2009 by ivorip
