Hello everyone, I need help on how to achieve a daylight in an interior scene passing thru a window. I am a new user of MAX and still getting around it. attached file (a bathroom scene) is the image i am using to explore the max: In this scene i used mrSky, logarithmic exposure with 2500 physical scale, mental ray rendering. I was playing with the parameters but can't get the answer i want so i wanted to ask help from anyone here. And also comments for better outcome the next time. Anyone's help is highly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Rowel and welcome!

By passing through the window, do you mean volumetric lighting? Light a shaft of sunlight? Or do you just mean some of the mrSun coming through?

You can drag a SkyPortal over the window - I'm a huge fan of them.

If you mean the first, I've had problems with Volumetric light and mrSun.

Hey SandmanNinja, thanks for replying. I don't exactly know what all these

volumetric lighting,Light a shaft of sunlight, etc. means at the moment. But what i want to achieve is just a strong light coming thru the window like the light from the sun(?) I will try the SkyPortal if that's what I need but how can I do that? Where can I find the skyportal? thanks again

SandmanNinja, sorry, I just checked on your website and I've seen all these interiors. That's what I want to have to my scene. Like those strong lights coming from an opening (windows/doors). Did you use SkyPortal with your interior perspectives? Then that's what i needed. How can I do that to my scene? Where can i find the skyportal and how is the parameters? I hope you can help me, thanks man. I will be grateful!

Hi Rowel,

I use Max 2009 and there is a SkyPortal under Create -> Lights

I use AutoGrid and drag a skyportal (it just looks like a rectangle or border, with an arrow in the middle) over any window or doorway in my scene.

I use a realistic lighting setup, meaning Under Environment (press 8), I use mrPhotographic and realistic camera settings.

For internal scenes, I use a shutter speed of 1/4 or 1/8 (sometimes as high as 1/30 if there are a LOT of windows), ISO 100 (ISO 400 can be used for interior scenes, but in Film Speak ISO 400 is very grainy. Not really an issue with artifical cameras, but I still use ISO 100), and an f/stop of 7.1 or 8 (for big depth of field, which doesn't really apply to virtual cameras).

I'm an architectural photographer and have been doing this for a long time. So I tend to think of lighting solutions as if it were a real house and I was photographing it.

Hope this helps.

What version of Max are you using?

Hey Joel,

thanks again. Yes, I guess i already incounter this skyportal (i remember now) over the web. I've seen tutorials. But it's with max2008 and 2009 version.:( I am using max9 that's why I was a bit confused where i could get this skyportal. I guess i need to upgrade to max2008 or 2009 already. I just started with max early this year and didn't have enough time to explore yet. Anyways, thank you fro taking time to reply. I will try to explore other ways in the meantime until i can upgrade to higher version. thanks. keep on maxing!
