Finally in a studio

Hey guys,

Well after about 3 years of freelancing, I have finally gone to work in a studio. Its down here in Charleston, which is about 4 hrs from where we use to live. We finally got moved into our new house and everything last week and I started work last Tues. They even let me build my own comp, which was very surprising.

Basically what I am doing is creating models that will be used in Training simulations for the military.

So that's about it. I was going to tell everyone last week, but I forgot. I'm still going to freelance, but once this Volvo gig I is over, hopefully I won't be doing it quite as much and I can get back to learning things that I want to.

Thanks everyone

Congratulations Brandon, quite comforting to hear that actually you have found a job during hard economy times, all we read lately are sad news about people forced to move out of the business and change jobs.

Congratulations and best of luck!

Brandon, I moved to Durham at the end of June. Its quite the change from North Dakota and we're diggin it so far. Hush puppies rock my world.

if you are talking about those deep-fried onion enhanced cornmeal concoctions, your are making me homesick. i need to get back home to the south and get some proper food.

Awesome! Savannah is one of the Big Three St Patty's Parties in the USA!!

Don't they dye the river green? Or is that someplace else?

They used to. Now they just dye all the fountains instead. And Billabong, if your memories are all a blur from Savannah, it definately was St. Patty's here. Pretty much an excuse to throw a 3 day (or more) party.

They still dye the river green in Chicago!

Congrats on the new job pal. If an overload of freelance comes your way, you know where to pass onto right?

Hi Brandon. First of all, congrats for your new job!

I work at a studio and in the future want to freelance. As you'e been doing this a quite some time, I'd like to know(in your opinion):

- which you prefer (freelance or studio)?

- advantages and disadvantages?

Thanks.

hey ,Thanks Christopher

@Nelson,

Honestly the biggest con for me when it comes to freelancing is the stability. You never know when your next check is going to come in. Its a roller coaster ride as well. During the months of Nov. to til around the end of Jan. it seems work just dies. At least it did for me, two years in a row. So that is the main reason I took and wanted a studio job. I do realize there are no certainties in life and this studio job could end tomorrow, but its more likely my freelancing job would end more than this perm. job.

Now as for the pros of freelancing. Well you can pretty much go to work in your underwear if you wanted to. You are your own boss. Basically you will get out whatever you put in, but sometimes that's not even enough.

Honestly, freelancing is very stressful. This is my opinion of it and I'm sure someone may disagree with me.

This is how I see it and I hope I have been some help to you.

Good luck!

I'm not trying to sidetrack your thread, but I agree and this is the reason I left freelancing as well. I also wanted to complete my IDP hours, pass the ARE and become a licensed architect.

I think it'd be great to hear from some other seasoned pros on this as well. Ernest and Dibbers are some of the vets who have been rather successful at it. As somebody who's experienced both sides of the fence, it's hard to pick one that is better in this industry. Obvious advantages to both - I guess it just depends which are more important to you.

Shake what your momma gave you.
