how to create generative / transitioning forms in rhino?

Just out of interest! are you guys using Rhino for both design and model?

For me personally, I draw and design in AutoCAD 9 and then transfer the linework into Rhino - to then extrude, model etc...

Then again 3D modelling as a design tool is invaluable - to sort out those problem areas that cant be seen in flat 2D plans.

Does anyone know of a converter to bring Max models into Rhino?

that would be nice but we know how protective and counterproductive a certain company is with it's file formats.

there is also ParaCloud and to a lesser extent VisualARQ. I am going to get my hands dirty with that RhiKnoBot plugin asap.

yup design, model & document

I prefer to export from Max in OBJ format with the quads option. I collapse the modifier stack first though.

or STEP if you want to keep nurbs

but when is the last time i saw a natively created nurbs object in max i needed to put out to another program? never, autocad: all the time, as autocad is a nurbs modeler for windows too and in that case SAT ACIS is the format you want to go out in.

Obj is a newer format with more support than 3ds correct?

is there anywhere a break down in comparing these 2 exists?

Fran have you tried the new Quad Meshing plugin for Rhino?

The thing about exporting 3ds from Max is the 64k poly limit.

I have not tried the quad meshing plugin. I can't see where it is of much use to me.

I have still yet to upgrade from Rhino 3.0 to 4.0

However I am wanting to try and take my models done in Rhino into 3DS MAX. What is the best way to do this?

Also, I put alot of 'POSER' people models into my Arch-Viz scenes, so how can I transfer what is a polygonal mesh with alot of pieces into MAX from Rhino?

I have 3DS MAX 8, and every time ive tried to import either IGES, OBJ or 3ds from Rhino it just wont open.

Do I need a converter plugin?

What are the pros and cons of me doing the following;

Upgrading to Rhino 4.0 & Vray for Rhino 'OR'

Upgrading to Rhino 4.0 and then exporting it all to 3ds MAX and render there?

Thanks in advance!

One way is to convert surfaces into meshes than export it as obj, it works for me every time.

Other way is to use nPower plugin for max, I think it adds possibility to import 3dm files into max, but didn't try this, I just hate how max handle NURBS.

Why just you import it directly into max?

PROS

Well, first of all better manipulation of geometry, when you export it as mesh (especially if it is complex) it just pain to do some changes later on it in Max. There could be some mapping problems, UV things, strange artifacts, etc, at least that is what I experienced.

Model as mesh isn't always that good as NURBS.

Much of features of VrMax are implemented in version in Rhino.

CONS

There is some Vray features that are not implemented and that existing in Max (VfM is much mature software than VfR) like Vray fur, partial implementation of Vray IES, vray proxies etc.

100% of work I do in Rhinoceros I render it with Vray for Rhinoceros. I just do not have need to export it in Max or any other package. But that is subject thing ...
