Crazy Homeless Guy
I want to spend some time studying the masters throughout the centuries of painting. I am mainly interested in those who had a in depth understanding of light, and how to use it in a scene. I have not studied art history since college, but I do believe it is important. My goal is to better understand their use of light, and how their discoveries can be incorporated into what we are doing with lighting in visualization today. So, if you don't mind sharing, who are your favorite artists that mastered control of light?
Spooner04
Piranesi has probably some of the most interesting stuff I've seen IMO. Most of his stuff is architecturally related and the lighting is always very drastic. Pretty cool stuff. I really like looking at Thomas Schaller's work. He's not really what I would call a master of light, but his watercolors have been a staple of Arch. rendering for years. He also has some nice analatique layouts that he uses. I also like Francis D.K. Ching's drawings. They are just pencil sketches pretty much, but they have a neat quality about them. His books are also great to have as technical and conceptual references. Jim Mann
Just adding to your list... For light, especially in relation to architecture it has to be Edward hopper. For really dramatic use of light, Georges de la Tour. For modern urban context and photorealism then you can't do better than Richard Estes...unless you like cars too, in which case Robert Bechtle might shade it.
