How would i do this in 3d? i tried bend, twist, rail 1, but it doesnt seem to give me the result. any help is appreciated thanks
Tommy L
Which way does it twist? You used the correct modifiers, I suggest you post a visual description of what you are trying to achieve.
Antisthenes
sweep 1 rail was the right way, you just need more profile curves and to change the direction arrow on them in accordance with the twists you want.
Tommy L
Id use a loft. Most control.
SandmanNinja
http://www.cgarchitect.com/vb/32928-moebius-ring-max.html that should do it
Derek Forreal
if you want to use 'bend', then it should behave as expected, but you need to make sure that your piece of paper has enough segments in order for the bend modifier to have some points to bend. so, for example: 1. create your paper from a plane (2cm x 20cm) 2. add 10 segments to the long side when you create it (so it looks like you have 10 x 2cm x 2cm paper segments all joined up). 3. apply your bend modifier. 4. when you apply the bend modifier, change the position of the modifier gizmo to influence how the bend is applied HTH
johnnlo
that helps, but rather than having a 360 even loop i was hoping to get a loop that is curved at one end and meets at a sharp angle on the other end. Sort of a tear drop shape. a bit stuck on that.
rmccoy
using the 2cmx20cm strip with 10 segments. you could possibly use 3 bend modifiers to achieve this. start with one bend modifier on each end (by moving the gizmo towards each end) and bend them each opposite of the main bend modifier (third in the modifier stack) placed in the center of strip. I haven't tried this but I bet you could get a similar result by playing with multiple bends and moving the gizmo and limiting some of the bending. rmccoy
I tried the method I listed and it works. I've attached some images and a zip file with a copy of the max file. Hope this helps.
Derek Forreal
you can use rmccoy's method, or, once you have the paper strip bent into a 'circle', do the following: 1. apply an 'edit poly' modifier (or convert to editable poly). then, pick the top verts only (lasso selection to make sure) and use 'soft selection' with the desired falloff (this will depend on the size of your paper but use enough to affect approx half of your strip). then scale inward on the x axis (see 'step 1 before and after') 2. now lasso select the verts shown in 'step 2 before' and use falloff again (i used same setting as step 1). this time, move downwards and you should get the teardrop shape. sounds a lot more complicated than it is! hope the explanation is clear. in a bit of a rush as i have a lot to do but let me know if it's not clear and i'll try to explain better
