Jeff Mottle
In a recent thread about color a couple of people indicated they were color blind: http://www.cgarchitect.com/vb/32278-test-your-colour-perception-iq.html I'm sure a few more might respond as well. I'm curious. As someone who works in an industry where color is very important, how does being color blind affect your ability to work?

Justin Hunt
I studies Graphic Design with a guy who what totally colour blind. To over come this he wrote the name of each colour on his markers and coloured pencils. Most of the time he got by with this, except a few occasions where he would colour the sky bright pink and the people blue. Still passed though. I am not sure if he ended up persuing a career in graphics in the end. jhv
andreg
I'm colourblind and have been doing graphic design for over 15 years. Only once, I lost a job because of it, the job was to match clients signage panels to pantone colors and stuff. In this particular case, I couldn't rely on the good ol RBG values with the color picker, I had to use my eyes and not what the computer perceived. But I love this field of work and i'm a tenacious ******. I am now senior 3D designer for the company work for and manage to do amazing renders nonetheless. I do have to ask someone for help sometimes in very particular cases, but the people here find it funny and they know I wouldn't let something go without making sure the colors are okay. Also having a good understanding of how light works (I'm also a photographer) really helps making other people understand that white paint in a dark corner isn't white. All I can say about our condition is that there are ways around it, colours are only values either RGB, CMYK Hex you name it. (unless you work in printing, it's hard to get the RBG value of a print) Good luck Edited November 3, 2008 by Jeff Mottle
Justin Hunt
I worked with an an architect once who was colour blind although would admit it. We had a blistering argument once over the colour of some cladding. He kept on saying that what I was producing was too pink. Even when I showed him the RGB valued in Photoshop that the image was actually grey scale and no colour info at all. Same with an interior designer, who proceeded to lecture me on how women see coloiur more accuratly than men, when explaining that the colours of the renders were all wrong. We had a good laugh when I pointed out that she was viewing the images on an uncalibrated monitor and a crappy printer and all the colours were derived from the Dulux website which gives the exact RBG values for their paints. jhv

D.B.
I'm color blind too, but my brother is even worse! I've found that picking colors is easier for me using HSV, and have a chart by my screen...yellow is 16.6, blue is 66.6, etc. Brown can be a problem though, and that's when I ask my wife for help. There are a couple of devices that may help though. ColorMax lenses in spectacles are supposed to help some people with red-green deficiencies, and another is the X-chrome contact lens. I experimented with the X-chrome a number of years ago, but couldn't live with a red contact len in one eye. It did make colors more vivid..especially red.
