You have got to by any means check out a football match (soccer) depending where in London you'll be (West, North, South, East) I reccommend either Arsenal or Tottenham, even West Ham. If anyone mentions to watch Chelsea, forget it dont waste your money! :)

Along the Thames River is a great choice for site seeing, check out the eye of London, that'll get your barrings right.

Theres plenty of Cockneys on this site who can steer you in the right direction as well.

Start in South Kensington (IMO the most picturesque area of London), at the V&A and Natural History and Science Museums, walk up the Brompton Road to Knightsbridge until you hit Hyde Park -have a stroll around it (the best park in London IMO). finish your walk around Hyde Park in the NE corner and walk along Oxford Street for a spot of shopping, hit Soho and move south doing the touristy stuff around there (Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Sq, Covent Garden, Trafalgar Square - maybe even the National and National Portrait Gallerys which I highly recommend), the move down Whitehall and see Horse Guards, St James Park and Westminster Abbey / Big Ben etc. Cross the river at Westminster Bridge and Walk east along the south bank for the sights there.

Oh there are certainly other areas i would try and see, mine was a simply a day or two walk or so.

Camden Market, Liverpool Street/The City, Greenwich Park/Maritime Museum/Greenwich Uni (as a former student it is a wonderful area with a superb view of London from the top of the park), Canary Wharf, Brick Lane, Old Street (for a night out)...

Richmonds pretty attractive, though maybe not 'strictly' London.

City's been mentioned, but I would suggest the weekend when the suits have dissapeared, can get like a ghost town which is great!

Just make sure you try some local brews: Fullers, Youngs being among the larger breweries
