Trevor Tizard
Hi All, I've recently inherited the task of prepring a couple of micro-sites for our business as the guy who used to do then no longer works here. I've got a copy of dreamweaver mx 2004 but have no experience in this area. I've done plenty of 2D graphics work over the years, but never web design. I would be gratefull if those of you who do web design could give me some pointers to get me started. Books, online tutorials, tips etc. What do you guys use for layout - Dreamweaver, illustrator, indesign, photshop etc? Unfortunately the current economic climate means I can't book a training course and will have to slog it out myself. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Thanks Normally I use Photoshop and Illustrator for layout of graphic design elemets, but for wireframing I've strated to use an application called Axure. It's likely not something you would use as someone just learning about web pages, but really helps in crafting the core functionality and layout pages before you even get to the graphics. Thanks I use Illustrator and Photoshop to design and layout the graphical elemets and used to use it for the design layout as well. I recently started using an app called Axure though. As someone just learning how to create web pages, this is not neccesary, but I find it great to wireframe the core functionality and layout before graphics are even considered. There are TONS of HTML books on the market, so I would pick anything that reviews well on Amazon. I remember teaching myself HTML in 1996 using an editor called HotDog and remember how difficult it seemed. One thing that has changed since I started is the use of CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) to do the design of webpages. I would make sure one of your books includes a solid background on using style sheets if not an entire book devoted to it. My reccomendation would be to find a book on dreamweaver, one on HTML and one on CSS. Just keep in mind that many HTML tags are somewhat obsolete and can be done with CSS. Dreamweaver used to come with some decent tutorials too, so you could probably start there.
johnvid
If you've never done web design, take a look at netobjects fusion.
