we have tens of thousands of photos on our server. whats the best way to categorize these images?

i wonder if there is a program that allows users to add keywords to photos as they find them useful, and they can be searched for later based on the key words. these key word searches should be available to everyones machine through the network.

i'd love some input on how to make our huge photo collection more easily accessible.

Lightroom is a gr8 app for keywording photos as it is adaptive - http://www.photoshopuser.com/lightroom2/

-- check the Matt.K Keyword improvements video (right top)

, but you'll find one small prob, its not to be used over a server thus you'll have to sit down and keyword everything in one go and then export the library and use and app that allows for keyword search (XMP search) like Itag if that is a search app

Thanks for input. I noticed that pica has a keyword feature…. Nice. Bridge also has a similar keyword feature and it seams to be a bit more advanced than Picas, but picas interface in my opinion is pretty quick. I was able to browse thousands of photos in minutes.

Question… upon labeling a photo with a key word, will others on other machines be able to query that information?

Do you guys see any pitfalls to one or the other?

Im looking at these programs as a way to manage my assets without completely reorganizing the server (or creating duplicate images) which is something that really doesn’t benefit everyone in the firm because it would only cater to my needs.

Im also looking at promoting this to the marketing department as a way to categorize images in ways inconsistent with the directory structure, a structure that adequately organizes our photos but limits quick retrieval of images.

thanks

From a scalability and longevity standpoint, you might want to consider an app that supports writing the meta data to sidecar files. (just an XML file) which will allow you to move info across platforms in the future. Putting data into a proprietary database or into the image itself, will be problematic if you decide to change things up in the future.
