pyang
Hi, I used both sketch up and 3ds max. Is there a way to export a sketch up model which retain its material into 3ds max? Is there an export format that allows for this? any help is appreciated, thanks.
BrianKitts
A .3DS file will retain the material info, unfortunately all off sketchup's grouping's translate into multi-sub materials, so it's not as clean as you'll probably want..... you could have only 4 materials in your scene but when you import to max you'll end up with a ton of multi-sub mats all with various configurations of those initial materials. creasia
3ds format is the best for simple objects. I have done this with cars and other 3D warehouse objects. Exporting as 'single object' gives you a multi-subobject material, which you can edit quite easily. Exporting high poly geometry in this format can literally hours though. The most efficient export out of sketchup is dwg format for geometry. This exports quickly, and you retain all of your component heirarchy. I can export high poly scenes this way. Create your whole model with every material on it's own layer and assign by layer in Max.
lamine_aa
hi, yes you can export your file in skp into 3ds with your material chosen in sketchup, please Follow these steps : 1- this exemple in sketchup : 2- chose export to 3d model : 3- Click in Options : - Chose export by material - check export texture maps click Ok, then click export. 4- Now go to 3dsmax and create new file. go to File\import. finaly with same method you can take all the material : for any question you can send me private message. i'm so sorry for my langauge , because i'm verry bad in english . BrianKitts
3- Click in Options : - Chose export by material wholly crap..... I can't believe I've never flipped down the "full hierarchy" tab to see that option for materials only. Is that a new option or have I just been really blind? exporting that way and using the material replacer that comes with the archicad import wizard for max, will make it easy for updating models if you have a designer working in sketchup and you're doing the finishing in max. RayOfLight
although this topic is fairly old already,I'll still let you know that the current version of 3dsMax 2010 with connection extension has the possibility to import .skp files directly now.
