Negative extrude

Hey all, this has got to be a newbie question but after searching numerous forums, reading all user references from max i still cant get a solution for my problem..

wich is that after i shapemerge a shape on a mesh, for cutting windows doors etc, or after simply connecting the shape on the mesh i have trouble extruding inwards. When i extrude inwards it doesnt show because my original mesh remains intact while my connected shape does extrude...

Now is this because i have flipped normals or missing edged/faces, or just sumthing im overlooking ?? i know i can model it differently but i just want to understand what im doing wrong?

maybe this screenshot will help understanding my problem... -->

Jape,

It's hard to tell from the images exactly what's happening.

Shapemerge projects the 2D shape into the 3D surface along the positive Local Z-axis of the shape and cuts new edges into the surface.

Is your shape pointing it's Local Z-axis to the outter wall from between the wall surfaces?

Does your wall have coplanar faces?

In the shaded viewport, right-click on the viewport label and choose Edged Faces in the menu. This will let you see both shaded and wireframe so you can see if the correct surface is being cut.
