New Computer Setup

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Im looking to invest in a new computer setup and would like some advice

to get good rendering speed and stability, smooth viewport manipulation and good handling of large files.

In your experience what is the most important aspect in achieving this and what components would make up a good computer for 3D work? A good graphics card? plenty of RAM? Processor? Im no computer expert so any advice would be great!

Just whatever is best really, Ive had a look through older posts and it seems RAM is very important for rendering and a mixture of a good CPU and Graphics card is good for modelling etc. Ive even heard of ppl having seperate computers for rendering and a workstation.

...now why would they have separate computers for doing these things!!!

Maybe they want to keep working on one workstation while another is rendering ;) Hmm, what's the name for a dedicated group of nodes for the purpose of rendering? Could the answer be "a render farm"?

Hi there,

Actually I was originally looking in getting this Dual Xeon:

2 BX80574E5430A - Xeon E5430 QC LGA771 2.66Ghz 12mb 1333Mhz Box Active Cooling

1 ASUS Z7S WS Dual Xeon SKT771 INT54006 Fully Buffered DIMM DDR2 Intel Matrix Storage (for Windows only)

(Support RAID Software 0, 1)

4 Kingston KVRD2E5K2/4G - 4x2GB kit 800Mhz DDR2 ECC (not registered)

1 Cooler Master 590 Black Mid Tower ATX Case

2 Antec TriCool 120mm Fan w/Blue LED - 3-speed selector switch

1 PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610w Power Supply - SLi-ready, Black

1 ASUS 20x Lightscribe SATA Dual Layer DVD+/-RW - Black

1 3.5" 1.44MB Floppy Disk Drive - Black

3 Seagate 250GB Barracuda 7200rpm SATA300 Hard Drive - 32MB Buffer

1 MS Windows XP Pro Edition 64bit (w/upgrade or system purchase)

1 VCQFX3700-PCIE-PB PNYNvidia Quadro FX 3700 PCI-E 512MB GDDR3 DVI-DL + DVI-DL + ST

All for $3,900 Cad.

And then somebody mentioned the option of having the same power split in two systems. As you mentioned before, 1 for rendering and 1 for modeling, etc.

The two systems would be as follow:

Workstation: (With better Graphic Card)

Case: Whichever

Power Supply: Corsair 650TX

Motherboard: GigaByte GA-EP45-DS3 (P45)

Ram: Corsair - TWIN2X4096-6400C4DHX - 2x2048mb (4Gb) - CL44412

CPU: Intel C2Q Q9550 2,85Ghz (12mb)

HD: Seagate ST3500320AS

Graphic Card: GF9800GTX+ 512mb or Quadro FX 3700

DVDRW: sata LG o Samsung

Rendering Computer: (With so so Graphic Card)

Case: Whichever

Power Supply: Corsair 650TX

Motherboard: GigaByte GA-EP45-DS3 (P45)

Ram: Corsair - TWIN2X4096-6400C4DHX - 2x2048mb (4Gb) - CL44412

CPU: Intel C2Q Q9550 2,85Ghz (12mb)

HD: Seagate ST3500320AS

Graphic Card: GF8400GS 256 mb

DVDRW: sata LG o Samsung

Now the big question is:

Will the two systems have the same "power" than the dual xeon???

Thanks a lot!!!!!!

Tucu

You can rely on the new stuff. Of course it's been tested - a lot. We're not talking about American cars of the 80's here.

I can only think of once instance of a bug making it through the Intel CPU testing process. It was the original Pentium's floating point error. It didn't cause any actual problems but Intel replaced the chips anyway.
