nichchris
Hi All, I'm posting some light studies I did prior to doing the lighting for a 3D House scene I did.. Here is the link to the scene image.. its approx 40Meg Max file broken into some 100 items that are are linked into max at load time. I took some 8+ hours to render and consists of some .5 Million polys ..(yeah I know.. I know... optimize.. man!) anyway.. so here are the studies for those who may want the info for reference. Of course this is usign fR. web page link to house shot I will be posting some modified snaps of the exact light settings, positions, and type in a later post. all moved to: http://www.armedbandit.com/lightstudy.html nichchris [ July 14, 2003, 06:34 AM: Message edited by: nichchris ]
John Dollus
Saw your other post so I will offer up a reply The attenuation comparison would be more helpful if you also illustrated a side shot indicating the attenuation start/end points in relation to the light source and receiving plane locations. Other than that, I think you illustrate some good points on shaping light quality with standard lights. The FR mention is misleading and might cause some to skip over the info. because they don't have FR even though no FR specific features are used in the examples. nichchris
Hi John, Yes exactly I was thinking the same thing myself.. But I waited to see if anyone would complain about that and you have .. so I will modify those to show exactly the location of the light and a grid to show distance traveled. And again you are right about the FR issue I will se if I can do something about that. thanks nichchris
nichchris
Before I start I will say that I will modify those previous posts I made in this thread on the images of those light studies to include light positions and distance grids. Cesar R
Hi, I am very impressed with the result of the render. i have some questions maybe you can help me. I am using v-ray and the techiques probably apply. 1) Why do you have so many direct lights and matching omins. What is exactly eactly each light contributing to? 2) What are the light domes for? 3) if you are using GI, can you just create one enviroment dome and one single traget light as the sun? Mabe this is why I have been having such problems with rad and GI no illuminating my scenes. The following is a link to threat were there is a JPG of a typical test setup, let me know why your is better? (by looking at results it obiously is ) JPG with my settings I look forward to hear from you, thanks for the effort to share your knowledge. I apreciate it
Cesar R
Hi chris, are you going to continue to develop this thread?
Sawyer
NC - This is an amazing setup you are creating. Thank you so much for walking through your lighting. Now you just need to do the same in v-ray & max 5 :ngelaugh:
nichchris
Hi Cesar, Yes I will, sorry its taking so damn long, but I was really busy the last few days at work, then I also wanted to help the GUY with the material ID problem, but I will get right back on it, no interruptions Hi Sawyer, thx nichchris

Cesar R
Nich, Will you sharing your model for further testing under different rendere engines? I dont necesarily mean the furniture, but the shell and lights.
nichchris
Hi Cesar, I don't think their is a point to giving out the model as a template "unless I repeated the senario with all the popular GI renderes" and you are using vray if I remember correctly.. so I will DL the demo and try this idea on it.. and report back to you on that, and if successful I will post my findings on my site as part of Light Studies, I will also do the same for Brazil. nichchris. mbr
Thanks for sharing your techniques. If you do try the VRay demo, I'd be curious what you thought of VRay vs. Final Render. I am still waiting for a comparison between them (and even Brazil).
