Sketchup 7

So has anyone had a chance to try v7 sketchup pro. Just curious what you think of the new features. I am just about to finish my semester project in sketchup and need to learn how to use vray. I am amazed at the quality of pictures you can achieve with vray and sketchup.

The only benefit I can see so far are that lines that cross each other now automatically intersect (unlike in SU6) and these 'dynamic components'.

I'm not particularly excited about it given they spent 2 years on putting it together but I don't use SketchUp as a product on its own, it's just a modeler for me pre Cinema and Vray.

They seem to have put quite a lot of time into a BIM style interface which generates reports and links to databases and these dynamic components that incorporates simple animation, none of which I will use unless I can twist the use of these components to quickly generate the models I need. Its whether they are versatile enough as no two projects I work on uses the same doors and windows etc.

completely unscientific, but I pretty much downloaded it and ran through a few of the larger sketchup files i've recieved, and it seems more responsive in terms of general viewport speed and navigation ;)

As to anything else.. I really couldn't say, most of my time in sketchup is taking apart other peoples files so they can smoothly import to max heh.

I am exploring the Google SketchUP 7 (Free Version). Nothing really new or greatly more useful than the earlier version - though you can now specify location for your model for shadow study (which, to me is a useful addition), edit your textures through your paint program, etc. I haven't so far found anything radically new for getting overjoyed!

As a Free SketchUP user I have nothing to complain - except being thankful to Google for the free version.

With best regards

PRSS

What would they multithread? It's still a modeler with a display, nothing CPU intensive.
try compiling a animation with sketchup..we do it for SD meetings. Also, making it multi-threaded can help lighten the load from the gpu with viewport display, although it seems the viewport was sped up with the new coding. besides multi-threaded apps is the way of the future.

A few things pop out at me:

-Textures are no longer limited to the 1024x1024 or whatever it was with previous versions. This is great for sat images etc, even large brick textures.

-Dynamic components are really nice...scaling windows retains correct jamb widths etc, and will add muttons based on specific spacing. You can also set them up to turn off elements within the component, and change materials. I'm not sure how usefull the animation tool will be for opening doors etc, might be nice for presentations.

I just downloaded a generic circular stair, here were the parameters I could edit, similar to Revit/Max:

Handrail Height

Pole diameter

Staircase inside dia

Staircase outside dia

Riser Height

Number of steps in 360 degrees

Stringer Ht

Tread thickness

Too bad it takes SU 5 seconds to apply changes...

SU7 has had some major upgrades. It does seem that since Google acquired it, they have concentrated more on it's use with Google Earth than developing a very strong piece of modeling/rendering software. People keep screaming for more out of SU but each release is a disappointment. I keep my fingers crossed for v8.
