Dave Buckley
A little bit off topic but . . . I’ve just finished rigging a mechanical model in 3ds max 9 but the scale is wrong and needs to be real world size. When I select all and scale, it breaks the rigging. So I tried attaching the rig to a master control object but some of the dummies/helpers in the rig can not be linked onto the master controller object as they do not work correctly when using the rig. We were wondering if there was another way to scale up the object. The problem initially occurred when we merged a file from Solid edge to 3ds max 9, using Polytrans. The Wrong scaling size was used and the model came in 24.73 times smaller than required, but this was not noticed until last week.
mattclinch
can't you just xform the whole lot? not too up on rigging, but xform is usually the answer to most scaling issues in some way. Edited November 21, 2008 by mattclinch can't spell.

relief7
Yeah that is really mean, noticing it too late... This happened to me a few times, too. If you can redo the rigging I would strongly suggest to scale, reset the xform and re-rig it. There could be so many other problems with a scaled rig so it is best to keep it at 100% percent. What you could also do is animate the small version, pointcache to disk, reload it on a scaled version or use the mesher object to scale it up. I hope you can work it out ! Rigs are mean ! :-)
Dave Buckley
could you explain that bit about using 'point cache to disk' it is something i am not familiar with but would like to try
Dave Buckley
guys i am confused with this whole, 'xform the whole lot' and 'xform reset' everything is rigged, and if you read the original post, i wan't able to link everything to the master controller, so i can't just apply one x-form modifier. However like i say, the object is already rigged but not yet animated. If you guys could help me further with this it would be much appreciated. is it not possible if i cannot link EVERYTHING to the master controller
Dave Buckley
oh and with the point cache method, surely i could animate the small one and then save a point cache. But you then say that i can reload the point cache onto a scaled version. but it is scaling that i am having the problem on. Do you mean a scaled and rigged version, or just a scaled version. Sure i could re-import at a different scale, but there would be no rigging. If i can animate the small one and then just apply the animation to one that has been imported with no rigging then that would be amazing
Dave Buckley
if i open the model and then open the units dialogue box. I can go into units setup and change it from the current 1 unit = 1 millimeter, to 1 unit -24.73 millimeters. This doesn't distort the model, but i am unsure as to whether this a valid way of upscaling my model
