3DSMAX/backburner freeze

Hi I am currently rendering an exterior HD animation through backburner with vray. Due to the complexity of the scene I have been rendering in strips. The problem seems to be completely random. Some strips will render fine and some will simply stop. The cpu's go idle and progress just stops. I have tried all the solutions in my arsenal to combat this. Such as increasing the number of strips, changing bucket size, changing dynamic memory limit/max tree depth, Face level coefficient. I have rendered far more complex scenes than this one and never had these kind of issues. All the textures in the scene are of a moderate size and I am baffled as to what can be causing this. If anyone has encountered this problem, please can you advise if you have hatched out a solution?

Thanks
