Tommy L
You are trying to create a procedural mesh that will mold to any shape, retain its local proportions and always close neatly? If this is the case, I dont know how to do it. But I could recommend a programmer who could write a script that will do exactly what you want. I dont make anything off it by the way, Ive used him before and he was just awesome. pm me if this is a viable option.

Stephen Thomas
This technique will work for the hex pattern anyway if nothing else. http://designreform.net/2008/04/12/hexagons-with-classic-mesh-smooth/ Made this in a couple of minutes.
