adam3d
Sorry for the post, but I've seen a lot of posts on this topic. Just a short comment on this subject...Ugrading to Max5 couldn't be a better idea. The new poly tools are more advanced than the scripts for 4.2, and they're supported and updated by discret. Plus more tools are on the way, so knowing how to work them efficiently will give you a leg up on production workflow and efficiency. (the programmer for poly tools is in Minneapolis and is a great guy). If anyone has suggestionss, send them to me and I'll make sure he gets them. adam.holmes@autodesk.com (keep em short and sweet Other good reasons to upgrade: more UI options, new animation tools, GI and radiosity rendering (lightscape integrated), layers from Autocad, more scriptability, advanced texture UV mapping, more materials and shaders, much improved/faster shadows and lights (for GI rendering), new Backburner2 for network rendering...as you can see it's quite a list. (and that's the short list) Plus, with the new Subscription program you get updates as we release, plus extra tools you'd have to wait for without Subscription (check discreet.com for details) Call your local reseller for a demo, get a free demo CD from our website, and check out our new E-learning options. thanks, adam
kid
I think you should read the rules, this is an advertisement. And I'm happy with Max 4.2, UVW Unwrap update, and VRay
plastic
i'll take your advertising as opportunity for some critique concerning the max 5 update. -) its too expensive...max is too expensive. my friend is running maya complete, gets mental ray 3.0 for free, the whole thing costs less than 1/2 of max's price. -) where are the manuals? ok, no manuals...i can accept that, i don't read them anyway, but drop the price then. you charge 100euro for the manuals, but the update still costs 1000euro. apart from that, the update is ok. light tracer is way to slow, but the radiosity is very good. reactor is also cool. i did a reactor test recently, here is a video (divx 5.02 required): http://stud4.tuwien.ac.at/~e9926343/pics/membran2.avi i like the new poly tools, but the nurbs still suck badly. the only way to get good solids/nurbs support in max seems to be that npowersolids plugin package, that costs more than rhino3d, which is ridiculous. you could at least include booleans for nurbs. adam3d
Sorry, this was not meant to advertise (I'm not the sales person), but to clear up any confusion on what the key features of max5 vs. scripts and Viz4, etc. That's the discussion I want to have, and I'll gladly take off my demo-hat to explain things in more detail. (sales people never join these forums anyway, they'd be too tempted to post ads But, from my experience with design/viz customers in the midwest who're using max5, all are very excited and moved up to 5, becuase the new features are significant enough to help them in their workflow. I can provide contacts for reference if anyone wants to speak to a user directly. Their quality of work speaks for us more than me saying "hey, it's cool". Obviously everyone has an opinion on software, tools, etc. A productive dialogue is one where I can get your feedback to our developers and management, to implement features in Max that're important to you. That's why there's the wishlist forum on support.discreet.com. This feedback loop is part of what's made discreet so successful, and we continue to value your ideas as we move forward. As I said, I'm happy to discuss/post without sales-speak, and I appologise if my previous post was interpreted that way. adam
