SgWRX
hi. i have max9. i've imported a dwg file and it has many many lines. one of the elevations has about 5000 individual lines. all in all, when i look at task manager, max shows it's using about 680mb of memory and my system only has 2gb of ram. viewport performance is slow. anyway, i've created a copy of the scene, deleted all but one elevation and started attaching the lines. memory use jumps up to 1.5gb or so, then i save and close the scene, it's smaller, reopen attach more lines. seems like a lot to go through. i don't have autocad or autocad LT, any ideas or do i just need to trudge through it to try and get all the lines as one object. thanks steve
Crazy Homeless Guy
instead of closing and reopening, i think you can type gc() in the Maxscript Listener to clear the ram that is being used when you are attaching the lines.
SgWRX
ah, that's fantastic! where they heck do you learn about all the neat things you can do with that? EDIT: my mistake, found the reference! thank you very much! Edited December 6, 2008 by SgWRX
Crazy Homeless Guy
You might also want to try turning off the undo's, and then connecting the lines. You might find that you can attach all the lines at once this way because max only has to attach them, and not remember how to unattach them. SgWRX
well, done. the imported line work scene was 277,424kb. after attaching all the lines for each of the floors and elevations the new file saved is 30,396kb. wow.
Peter M. Gruhn
In case it wasn't obvious - are you sure you need all those lines? Need to run flatten in ACAD? Are someof them hatches or other unnecessary detail?

Nic H
i would definately get a 'demo' copy of autocad for doing this type of thing, it will save you alot of time.
ezb
Prior to importing DWG files in to MAX I like to do a filter selection set on both lines and polylines and delete remenants left over from 3D solid creation.
