Constant Bounding Box Display?

Does anyone know what causes a mesh to constantly show it's bounding box in the viewport regardless of if the object is selected or not?

 

This has happened to me a couple of times after I have attached a couple meshes together. The only way I have found to get rid of it is to select the mesh in subobject mode, grab all of the faces and detach them. Then delete the old (now faceless) object. Then rename the detached faces to replace the old one.

 

any ideas whats going on?
