Changing Drive Letters

Recommended Posts

I've added a second drive to one of my machines and installed a new Windows XP 64 bit. During the install I partitioned the drive. The install assigned the partitions "F" and "G". I have an external back up drive that uses those letters.

I'd like to change these to "H" and "J" (don't think I want to use "I"). I read in windows help how to do it but there is a warning about causing files to not know the correct path if one changes a drive letter. So far I only have installed windows and nothing else.

Is there any problem with me renaming these partitions?

Glad you got it installed.

No, in your case (ie no other programs, etc) you can do no harm, as windows won't let you rename a drive if there are system files on it (the paths that the warning is refering to relate to ones that other installed programs would use).

So, no problems if the partitions are blank, but if the system is using it there is nothing you can do (as far as I am aware).

edit: lecameleon beat me to it as usual! (so you can use a software tool to change drive letters for system drives?)

I have changed all of my drive letters (except for C: system drive) without having run into any problems.
