markf
With allot of help form this forum I added a second drive to my computer and installed Win XP 64 bit. I'm only using the computer for MAX, Vray, Pshop for now. I have another networked computer that has my e-mail and other apps. Obviously Windows XP 64 and Max need to access the internet and I might occasionally need to use a web browser. I have Norton Internet Security 2007 installed on the on the other drive using 32 bit XP and on the networked computer. I just checked with Symantec and the only internet security software they hae that works with Win XP 64 bit is a corporate version that costs $230. My question - Is having just windows firewall enabled enough protection? Is there some other internet security software that anyone uses for their XP 64 bit system that they like and hopefully doesn't interfere with their network (like the norton stuff seems to do untill you mess around forever making it work). Thanks!
AJLynn
Just use Windows firewall or Zonealarm and some antivirus, like Avast or Nod. Norton is bloatware anyway.
Antisthenes
spywareblaster is preventative, the hostlist from spybot helps, maybe malwarebytes (i just tried this and it found stuff others didn't)
markf
Wow, this forum is the best! So I was looking at AVAST and I can't tell if it works on 64 bit or not. I click the tech support button and nothing happens, maybe because I'm not yet a customer. It says it's free but than you need to pay $11.95 for a three year subscription or some such. It's not a big expense just odd that what clains to be free is actually $11.95. Anyway, AJ can you confirm it works on XP 64 bit? Kishore, Thanks again I will check out NOD and Comodo. So if I use those two is spybot also recommended?
Antisthenes
I prefer Clamwin FOSS because I don't want to waste cycles scanning every stuff If I want to check for virii in something I do. some of us found that ClamWin might be an option to those not interested in Avast.i mainly recommended spybot to add the advanced features Hostlist file not so much the cleaning and removing stuff as you would not have malware on a new system. and a defiantly say enable all spywareblaster's protection Edited December 16, 2008 by Antisthenes
AJLynn
I've been using Avast on XP64 for a long time. The subscription is free unless it's for business use.
