Devin Johnston
Does Xfrog work well with Vray?
Tommy L
yes it work well.
Tommy L
Maybe I should expand on that. I have the tropical trees and plants collection, the north american trees collections and another one I forgot about. I bought these a couple of years ago, so things may have changed. I dont use the generator, as I believe they make pretty good tree models and the libraries are inexpensive. Once you have the trees, its worth going through and replacing the materials then creating a vrayproxy you can just drop into a scene. Each tree comes in 3 'ages' (young, medium, mature) Like all tree solutions, they are a bit poly heavy. If you know what your doing with vray, this is not a problem. We've all seen the 5,000,000,000 poly test scenes that render in 30 seconds....
Devin Johnston
So it works pretty much like Onyx where you have to convert the tree to and editable mesh and then to a proxy?
Tommy L
So it works pretty much like Onyx where you have to convert the tree to and editable mesh and then to a proxy? My only experience with Onyx is the bamboo generator. Im guessing that the tree generator is essentially the same(?). In that case, yes. Any geometry thats created in 3d space is pretty much the same thing, be it created by max or a 3rd party. I find that the tree plugins (except rpc) are all just tools to enable tree modeling. Handling the resulting geometry and shaders is down to the user. There are many complains on these board about bag vegetation plugins. I think most of those complaints are donw to high expectations about the way the plugin will give 'instant results'. Vray is a 3rd party renderer. When Vray/chaosgroup brings out its own tree solution, maybe intant results will be on the table. Until then, generate geometry with a plugin or buy a ;library. Then be prepared to do some testing and re-materialing. I have been happy with xfrog, but then best tree results I have seen lately were from Koper and his 'quick animation' using VrayScatter(?) do a search and download the clip. Its quite an eyeopener, especially as he says it only took 30mins to set up.
Devin Johnston
Ok, I'd rather stick with Onyx or just buy a library of pre made models but I can't find any desert plant libraries that are any good other than Xfrog.

rmccoy
I'm pretty sure they are onyx trees too. Atleast by the look of them. I thought I read somewhere that they were though.
