Urgent Problem - Face selection

I have switched to another computer to continue my Maya learning and have an issue with this new PC.

 

I have installed Maya and its the exact same learning edition that was on the other PC but when I bring a file in I have been working on the Polygon Face selection isn't working properly. I am in shaded view and I can see the blue square on the face but when I select it, it does not shade in that face in orange to show you have selected it?

 

If I go to wireframe I can see the selected face but in shaded view it is not showing??? I have no clue what is wrong please help, thanks.

I dont use Maya, so I may be waaaaay off....but it sounds like either a preference setting or a normal problem to me.

 

I think Maya users are quite rare here.

You could try deleting your prefrences as tommy noted. If that doesnt work you may want to try updating your video card drivers.

That would be my guess - video issues, considering that the face is selected, just not displaying correctly. If you have access to the older PC you were working on, copy the preferences folder from that one and paste it onto your new PC. Does the new PC have an nVidia or ATI card? nVidia has always been better with Maya, you may have to try a few versions of the drivers too.
