Brian Smith
oh the memories! i even remember the first VHS tape i ever bought... Star Wars - Empire Strikes back back in 1984. http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/12/23/vhs-distribution-grinds-to-a-halt/ We already gave VHS a proper burial after JVC became the last firm to shut the door on VHS player production, but there was still one nail in the coffin that wasn't quite hammered shut. Today, it all ends. The last notable distributor of VHS films -- Distribution Video Audio out of Palm Harbor, Florida -- has shipped its final truckload of tapes, probably to a small town library or a mom 'n pop shop in a place you'll never hear of. According to co-owner Ryan J. Kugler: "It's dead, this is it, this is the last Christmas, without a doubt." An unceremonious way to exit, sure, but we have a sneaking suspicion that it'll one day be able to say it made it longer than practically every other physical film format that succeeded it. Here's one last tear for the format that was -- now, time to plan a trip to the local flea market.
Crazy Homeless Guy
Good riddens. Though it was a pain to author to at times because you needed extra equipment, in a way it was easy because there weren't as many factors when it comes to choosing resolution, and aspect ratio. Lester_Masterson
For all the good DVD+R is, it is simply quicker to smack a tape into a VHS and hit record. No waiting for intialization, warm up, cool down, menu ratio interference checking, circuit conditioning, etc. Can't tell you how many times I came home late and missed the first minute of a show because the DVD-R took too long to warm up. /humbug
Ricardo Eloy
Sad. Funny thing is that (so I heard) some film studios are actually still using the format to send copies of their movies to critics before its official theater debut. A way to avoid digital piracy, I guess (lower quality, needs (now) unusual equipment to make it digital and all... ). The world is a weird place... Peter M. Gruhn
We have tapes we still watch. Mom just gave my sister a couple tapes for Christmas. Gotta love how people think something stops working when a new model has been released. Saw a blog post today "I have the old one, but I just had to get the new one as soon as it came out!" A battery for a cel phone.
Tommy L
I saw BluRay for the first time last night. Really crisp.....but....I didnt like it. It made the movie (Dark Knight) look like a TV News broadcast. I sat there for ages trying to figure out why. I still dont know. I know make-up artists have had to change their work practices, but it wasnt the make-up. Maybe it was becuase that whole '35mm glow' thing wasnt there. I can see that something like 'Blue Planet' or 'Planet Earth' would be a different story, but a friend of mine watched Indiana Jones (the newest one) on BluRay and his opinion was that it spoiled the movie. I would love to hear other peoples opinions on it. (I just started a new therad with this in the off topic forum)

Once that task is completed, i think the deck is hitting the dumpster. I just bought my first blu-ray player this weekend, so I'm looking forward to hooking that one up tonight! out with the old, in with the new!
