Help! UNHANDLED EXCEPTION: Irradiance map thread..

It was all good last week, now if I try and render with the settings I was using for higher quality, Max will crash and at the end of the vraylog there is the following:

error: UNHANDLED EXCEPTION: Irradiance map thread

Last marker is at .\src\material.cpp, line 1746: VRayMtl::shade() {2}

On lower quality settings it will render fine. I had thought that I had added too much geometry since my previous batch of test renders so I saved out a small chunk and merged to a new file. Result was the same.

I'm running on Vista Business 64, dual quad core Xeon 2.83's with 8gb of ram so I don't think I'm running under powered.. Attached the vray logs if anyone can spot what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks

Mike

Hi Quiz

I sent them a shout, but they must have left already for the new year's holiday, and my deadline approaches

I think it is connected to displacement mapping. When I uncheck "displacement" the crashes go away. I'm new to vray but so far displacement has been nothing but trouble...

  • 8 months later...

I got the exact same problem (exact same error message too)

How did you get rid of this problem? (if you did :( )

The scene I can't render has been a huge load of work and it is extremely frustrating to be unable to render it...

Any tip would be MUCH appreciated

BTW I just noticed it's my first post on this forum even if I registered 6 month ago, so I'll introduce myself:

My name is Thomas, I'm an interior designer, 33, working for 10 years now, mainly in space planning I'm self employed for a year now and, thank God, I almost don't do offices anymore. I'm quite new to CGI, started Max/Vray something like 10 month ago, I'll be happy to show you some of my works as I get find a solution to this very annoying problem :)

Thank you for your help

Well, this thing is driving me crazy but I think it's simply a RAM problem.

I have a small render farm of 4 PC and I try to render one view on each PC. Each PC is, as I said, Max2009+Vray 1.50SP2 (both 64bits), CPU 9550 Core2 Quad, 4GB RAM.

The error message is not the same depending on the view. On anohter PC I just got this one:

error: UNHANDLED EXCEPTION: Irradiance map thread

Last marker is at .\src\displacementfunc.cpp, line 196: Done evaluating displacement function

But it can't be a displacement map problem in itself, as I tried to render without displacement on a PC and it is still crashing.

Also, the crash happens more or less quickly depending on quality setting and resolution. With high settings/high res, the crash happens during LC calculation, with lower settings/res it takes place on rendering.

Plus, two month ago I tried to render a view from my main PC, which got the same softwares but which is CPU i7+8GB and it rendered fine (until I had a black out in my flat, which of course put an end to the render :( )

The problem is I can't render it from my main PC as I am working with it, if I launch a render from it all my RAM is sucked and I can't work on antoher CGI project.

I'm gonna try to launch a render on my main PC tonight and see tomorrow if it crashed during the night, if not I guess I'll just have to buy more RAM for one of my render farm PC (and another motherboard, as 4GB is the maximum this one can stand)

If it crashed too I guess the file got corrupted in some way and I guess I'll just have to spend ages trying to find who's guilty in this hell of polys.

Needless to say that both of this options are pretty annoying.

I'm a bit depressed :D

According to the error, The thing that is causing the error is at the line 1746, you could probably consult a person who has ever done a progamming language which is C++ or Visual Basic....

Till the time let me see if i can find out where the line 1746 is !!

Probably caused due to a mterial. As while looking at the 1700 series of line, icould see that vray was loading some maps at that time.

And by the way, did you download any materials from the internet?? I could see something here....

Thanks a lot for helping me Videep

Yes, you're right. I launched a render 1H30 ago on my main PC (the "powerful" one) with high res and settings and it hasn't crashed yet. At this res/quality settings it would had crashed 40mn ago on other PC.

It is, I think, definitively a RAM issue. 4GB is just too short.

I guess I'll just have to see how much it will cost me to buy a new motherboard+RAM to put it in at least 1 of my render PCs. And of course I'll have to install again OS, soft, matlibs, etc...:(

It is a good punition for me. When I did this scene I had some free time, so I decided to try to learn while I was creating it. Basically I modelled everything with a high level of detail, plus this scene is a "render nightmare": something like 100 proxies (surrounding forest), a large displacement map (grass and carpet) and a LOT of blurry refraction (frosted glass panels). I didn't care about the render time, as it is a personnal project, no real deadline. I expected it to be long to render, but not impossible :(

It's a good lesson, I won't do this kind a useless extra heavy scene.

Once again thank you for your help
