Aaron
I am trying to model a wall surface in max 5 and I was looking over my progress and found that where points should align in a corner, they don't. The wall is cut up for detail purposes (ie, window openings, doorways) and when I try to manually set the location of the corner points, the application seems to ignore my location entry and places the point to the original position. included is a image of what my corner looks like. This is a top view that is zoomed in as far as it will go. Thankfully, the wall seems to look fine when viewed from a camera for rendering. But why are my wall corners becoming distorted and why can't I set them to a set location so that they all align? Please note, that I can move the points to another location but I cannot seem to set them to a position where they all align. Incidently, the surfaces are one sided and were created using the edit poly modifier. I was using the connect edges and extrude edges to create all the geometry. http://www.cgarchitect.com/forum/filepush.asp?file=pic_1.jpg Thanks for any help. Gander0
Have you tryed scaling the whole thing up maybe you've built your model to small....just a thought. Here are some posts on snap setting: http://www.cgarchitect.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=11;t=000010 Gander
CEJ
i think you might have axis constraints on, turn it of and you can move the vertex wherever you wish.
Aaron
Thanks for your help! CEJ, the link to a previous post about snaps is very helpful. Snaps are probably the root of my problem and I'm going to follow those suggestions in the future. The problem I am having still puzzles me though because the vertices still return to the original unaligned position even after I set each one manually to a common point. The thing that makes the unaligned vertices ok is that they vary a maximum of 1/100th of an inch. Not noticable in renderings... Thanks again for the help - Aaron
smoke3dstudio
From the picture, I am not too sure to tell. Possible to post another perspective view? or can send me the model to examine? Have you tried using view alignment or make planar?
Aaron
smoke3dstudio, I uploaded the portion of the wall I have been dealing with. The entire model has similar problems. The file was saved in MAX 5. I colored the portion of the wall I have been examining, red. I also placed a camera that shows the problem. If you cannot read MAX 5 file, I also exported it to 3ds but the corner is not colored and there is no camera. Incidently, I tried the make planar and align to view and still had the problem but it wasn't as bad. links to files: http://web.njit.edu/~arf3/points.max http://web.njit.edu/~arf3/points.3DS thanks Aaron
smoke3dstudio
Aaron, It's the camera problem. Your camera setting was odd and made me confused at the begining. I think you could not move the vertexes properly in this camera view. So, try not to move anythings in this kind of camera view. I have also adjusted the vertices alignment for you (by selecting all vertices and use VIEW ALIGN to left view) already. Just chk if it 's correct or not. http://www.smoke3dstudio.com/points.zip [ January 07, 2004, 10:49 PM: Message edited by: smoke3dstudio ]
