Hello,

I am an architecture student doing my masters. I have intermediate skills in maya, 3ds max, rhino.

I would like to get into scripting for my thesis.

What is the best platform to get into scripting?

Should i consider Maya MEL, Phython, RhinoScript... or anything else i should look into?

thank you for the info.,

Thomas

I think Python might be the most useful as you move forward throughout your career. It would give you a basis for lots of different apps, and OS's. But, depending on what you are trying to do RhinoScript may prove to be more relevant in relation to architectural forms, and studying design.

If you can create generative forms with Python Scripting, then I would go with that.

First I only really deal with max on a steady basis ;) and in architecture max/viz has a resounding lead.

python is a solid option for maya and xsi, and is strongly integrated into those platforms, maxscript's built in scripting is very strong, and expandable by way of the .NET framework, and a custom interface built by the autodesk devs, there are a few options for python in max however, primarily using a DCOM dispatch bridge and passing through that way, or by a blurpython plugin from the guys at blur studios, but max+python is a study in exploring new ground :)

Theres 3 main resources for scripting for max that i'd suggest, in order...

CGTalk 3dsmax-Maxscript forums - the main resource for getting questions answered (After searching it!)

Tech Artists.org - More centered around the game industry scripters, but has a good cross section of people working in different applications/scripting languages all in one place.

Autodesk Area maxscript forums - Less info, but can still get answers from the heavy hitters

The tech artists wiki might be a good place for you to start.
