Dave Buckley
We intend to deploy 3D Studio Max on a render farm, but instead of using BackBurner, we will be using our own application that provides 3D Studio Max with a render job via command line. 3D Studio Max will be running in silent, non-workstation mode, for rendering purposes only. - I understand that a licence is not required for non-workstation usage?- Do we require at least one licence to install and activate this configuration?- Is it possible to install 3D Studio Max on a render farm without owning a single licence, e.g. could a new 3D Studio Max render farm be created without the need to own any licences at all? How would you achieve the installation and activation for this?
charter
Im not entirely sure, but would suspect that you would need to own one legitimate licence, then you can run as many render nodes as you like.... I'm intrested in what advantage there is to configure a farm in the way you are proposing, as i just use backburner with up to 30+ machines with no problems........... Dave Buckley
not sure about advantages as of yet, just testing initially, thanks for the suggestions though and will sure as hell give out any advantages that i find, anyone else have any other ideas about the licensing
Nic H
what advantage would your own renderfarm solution offer over backburner?
Dave Buckley
i don't really know i've just been asked to test the thing by our developers i'm guessing stability, management (personal user gripes), a few current problems which we have been getting at our other offices, its still in development stage atm so not too much can be said. hence why i'm trying to find out if i can setup a render farm without needing to pay for licenses as its just testing,
Chad Warner
I'm pretty sure you have to own at least one license of Max in order to legally install it on the render farm, though I would imagine if you are only doing this for testing purposes, you could get away with the 30 day trial license. After all, if you end up using the render farm that you develop, you'll need to have a licensed version of Max to work with anyways.
