Hey guys.

Been supplied some Max files with Xrefs from another agency I need to tweak. Theyve supplied me a CD with a number of main MAX files, and a folder full of Xrefs.

When I try open the max file, i get a dialog popup with hundreds of lines like this:

The XRef object: "Layer:C1_Columns" can not be found within the file: "Z:\~2008\408035\03_Max\Xrefs\408035_Comm_1.max"

The XRef object: "Layer:C1_InternalCore" can not be found within the file: "Z:\~2008\408035\03_Max\Xrefs\408035_Comm_1.max"

The XRef object: "Layer:C1_ExternalWalls" can not be found within the file: "Z:\~2008\408035\03_Max\Xrefs\408035_Comm_1.max"

Any hints?

Thanks guys!

OK let me take a stab,

by the looks of the file object name, they were originally created in ACad or Revit. Imported or file linked into Max. That file then has been Xrefed into an other max file (problably to aid in additional modeling) However they either forgot to set the file to be "Overlay" so that any xrefed files will not follow that file when it in turn gets xrefed, or the max needs additional paths mapped to find the files. (sounds confusing I know)

If you search through the CD can you find the missing files?

If so try adding the path to your search paths in Max.

You may be able to track down the missing files through the asset manager. It should list all files associated and their paths.

Xrefs, if not managed properly can be a pain in the rear.

At a loss myself.

Are the paths you show paths you have or are they echoes of the remote site?

Do you think you have all the files you are supposed to just not joined right or do you think you may actually be missing something?

3dsmax.ini has a section for [XReferenceDirs]. I wonder if it would help to list your project directory there.
