Maya Maxwell Problem

Hello everyone,

This may be a noob question but I´ve just got Maxwell Render 1.7 and I have installed the plugin for maya but everytime I apply a maxwell material on maya every object the material is applied appears green... or if I turn the visibility to be hardware textured the object turns completely black. Although when I render the image everything appears correctly... Any clue of what may be causing this??

Please help me...

It's quite normal and is one of the long-term bugs in Maya. This used to happen with Mental Ray materials too. It's because Maya fails to correctly read the base colour for a material, so defaults to the green (texture mis-reads default to black).

Here's the work-around, it should work for Maxwell too...

1. Apply a lambert material to the surface and give it a colour (this is so you can see some colour in the viewport).

2. Select the lambert in your Hypershade then open it's attribute editor (Ctrl-A), then click the shading group tab (eg Lambert2SG)

3. Now, for Mental Ray you would click the "Custom Shaders" dropdown and connect the mental ray shader to the "Material Shader" slot. What you'll need to do is find the material override section for Maxwell and link the Maxwell Material Node into the appropriate slot.

4. This will display the lambert's diffuse colour in the viewport, but when you render with Maxwell, it will use the Maxwell material.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: Having just looked at the Maxwell site, it says that Maya should display everything correctly. So, try this...

1. Duplicate the Maxwell Material in the Hypershade,

2. Select the original, right click on the original's node and choose "select objects with material"

3. Right-click over the duplicated material and choose "Assign Material to Selection"

4. Delete all the nodes from the original material, keeping only the duplicated ones.

Remember this - this is a bug in Maya, not Maxwell. From time to time it still happens with MR materials too.

Good Luck ;)

Hi!

Thank you very much for your help but I just have to say I never got it to work... I have maya 2009 working with th maxwell render 1.7.1 and it still only shows the MXMs as just green no matter what material it is. Ive tried everything you said but nothing seems to work :(

I havent had much time lately (thats why I am only writting now) but now that I have a bit more time, I would really like to get this working...

Im sending a picture attached to show what I mean (although im sure you know...).

Thanks again,

Paulo
