jophus14
Your material has a reflection value on it so it is reflecting the white surrounding area. That is why it is turning out so grey opposed to black.
Fran
How many layers does your material have? Try 2, with one that is 100% rough and the other that controls the glossiness.
pjetrus
damn, I had bump mup in ref 0 slot(so I could tile it in 3d max) and forgot to uncheck it.. That is why it was so white... I'm rerendering it now.. hope to get it better this time

RayOfLight
personally I'd make the leather a bit less rough, a bit more shiny, to get smaller highlights and more visible structure of the leather.
