MegaPixel
This may sound dumb, but how do I get my rendering Dialog Box to stay up after a render so I can see how long the rendering took and so on? Thanks These Light Tracer Renderings are rediculusly Time consuming
plastic
the last frame rendertimes should be displayed in the status bar under the viewports. (consider vray free instead of light tracer, it is much better)
mbr
There is also the Summary Info under the File menu that has all the info, including last frame rendered (most of the time, anyway). There may be a script somewhere to keep track of render times. You think that they would have included some menu, like a light lister menu or something similar, to allow you to compare render times. Light Tracer is great for small files, but once you toss in raytracing and reflections, and try to render a decent size, it becomes worthless. I've stopped using it after it took 20 hrs to render a warehouse! Take a look at Delfoz's tutorial/suggestions for omni lights. It works like a charm (tweaking required) and is fast. Great stuff. It's somewhere on here...
MegaPixel
mbr, I was wondering if you could explain to me why MAX is so much slower then these other renderers you speak of (Vray, Brazil, Final Render...) It seems as though MAX can acheive the same results as these other apps but with more pain staking setup and render time. Is this a conspiracy by Discreet, to purposly slow down it's scanline to force speed hungry users to purchase additional software? Can't they just write in some new rendering algarythems to address the speed issues? I think I'm about to stir something up here
plastic
because a talented programmer can write a GI renderer in one day. (thats my impression of light tracer btw.) the key to speed and quality is spending weeks, months, years of optimizing code.
mbr
It is peculiar, to say the least. I mean, here's a top dollar piece of software that 'can' have spectacular results, but they fall short of intuitive (I gave up on the radiosity) or the time takes ridiculously long (LT is easy, but man, you have to have a weekend off to get one rendering done!). My bet is they didn't want to waste too much time when it looks like Mental Ray may be bundled with Max 6. It's too bad they won't toss in one of the current GIs. That's my guess. MegaPixel
Oh man, Mental Ray built into MAX 6? Is that a rumor or can you back that up? If Discreet really wants MAX to grab some audience, they really should throw Mental Ray into it and be done with it. I'm guessing they won't because that might make it too expensive overall and it could undermind the partnerships it has with the third party rendering companies. So when is MAX 6 due to poke its head out?
mbr
I CANNOT BACK THAT UP :-| !! I am merely reiterate gossip that was floating around other forums. NOTHING for sure!! There were people claiming to know for sure, and others that knew differently. In my mind, it makes sense, considering SoftImage and Maya have it. Personally, I'd rather see one of the other 3 included. I am pretty sure the last version of MR did not support RPC files, which is a HUGE issue for this profession. I don't really know anything else about MR, though. Go look through CGTalk or one of the GI renderer forums and I am sure you'll find gossip. Computer Arts Mag says that Discreet will announce it later this summer (SIGGRAPH?). But I am sure it won't be out for a while.
MegaPixel
I just went to the Discreet Forums and looked around. There is definatly some talk about MR 3.2 and a huge wish list for release 6. Interesting stuff.
