Peter M. Gruhn
OK, I lied to you. I've figured out that they have textures but the textures are just very very small. The Architectural materials all seem to have real world sizes of 1" x 1" which is just doofy. I can set my preview sphere in mat.ed. to 1" and then things look OK for selecting architectural library materials... but then the rest of the world is borked. And the Arch materials seem to be nicely sized IF I don't apply a real world UVW map... I'm on Max 9. Am I missing a good way to work with this? Wouldn't be the first time I attacked something from the angle it didn't expect and was blind to the right way. Or is it just kinda broken and and needs putting up with? danb4026
Peter, did you ever get an answer to your question? I have a similar, if not, the same question. When using "real world" size, my previews in the Mat Editor have such a small map size that you cannot make out the texture at all.
SandmanNinja
Need to go to the material map and tick Real World Size there as well. With it unticked, the tiling is 1. When you tick the box, the "1" is replaced with a real world size and it's usually very small (depends upon your system units, I believe). So, plug in an accurate value and Bob's your Uncle. danb4026
I do have real world map size checked there as well.
SandmanNinja
what size filled in the field then? 0.001cm? Did you put a realistic value in there? And you are using a UVWMap modifier?
danb4026
I have 8'4" for width and 14.5" for height, with the a 90 degree w rotation. They are bitmaps of floor planks taken horizontally with a large width and low height. The image below will show you what I mean.
Peter M. Gruhn
I think I did solve it but have no memory how. Max is firing up now for something else, I'll check... Looks like I did it with just setting the sample size to 0.5. That way I can see what material I'm selecting from a library. Haven't been using library materials a lot lately so I don't have a workflow for that. Might be inclined to set sample small at the outset, grab the materials I want, then set sample to maybe 64 and go through and try to set all the materials to their correct real world size for working with.
