David Barbarash
Hmm.. well the obvious answer would be to model it. This of course depends on what kind of roof it is. Cedar shakes? Asphalt shingles? Slate? Spanish tile? Be a bit more descriptive and we may be able to help... David Barbarash

LKlemenc
Here is one tutorial I once made for a Slovenian 3D/2D page. It's written in Slovene language, but I think it's quiet understandable (all major words are bold). The trick is that you attach all your tiles to one single mesh and assign MaterialbyElement modifier. Hope that halps somehow
Sergio
Hi LKlemenc! your tutorial looks very interesting. Only one thing I could not figger out, and that is in points 5 and 6, how do you apply material, and colouring different tiles in different colours? Regards Sergio! When you attach all the tiles together each tile becomes an element of that object.

DelfoZ
to ATTACH a single MESH objet to other 1.-Convert it to Editable MESH if the objet isnt a mesh 2.- go to MODIFY/ scroll it to EDIT GEOMETRY and click ATTACH or ATTACH LIST... and DOne.. ** Don't use Boolean to atach
Sergio
Thanx DelfoZ! Boolean is so bad and gives so much trouble... there were some articles against boolean, so many times I lost, due to using boolean, some faces, while making window openings... Some people refer to non free Power Boolean plug in; wich demo I downloaded, it is also making mess...
