aligrafix
I m having problem using hair and fur modifier in max 9 32 bit. I have a big scene for architectural animation and i want to use grass on it. A simple spline created the lawn boundary and then i applied extrude on it. When i apply hair and fur to a small box, its just ok but when i apply the same modifier (copy/paste) then systems hangsup when rendering it. There is no kink, frizz or multi-strand parameters and total hairs = 15000. I have Core2Quad Q6600, 2G Ram. Plz help thanks.
Dave Buckley
hair and fur is a nightmare, and if you are using lots of it then you got no chance, it takes forever to render, there are better ways of doing grass than using hair and fur. just do a search on here for "grass"

Try render your scene without the grass, then render only the grass without other objects, lastly, combine them in any image editing package (Photomontage) Does this help? --artarc
aligrafix
I m rendering animation not a single frame or image. Thats y i wanted to use fur otherwise i can place it in pshop or any image editing software.Problem is that if i render the fur alone, it takes too long to render (doesnt renders). The only option is the vray displacement i think.
Crazy Homeless Guy
Like victor said, render the hair and fur in a separate pass. When you render the hair and fur, render it in scan line, and comp in you compositing application. This is the fastest way to use it. You will have to have some experience with old school lighting techniques to do a convincing scanline though. Also, displacement is a completely seperate thing than hair and fur. Displacement may get you the results you want, and if it does, use it, but it is not the only option.

This would take care of your lighting and shadows. Then, render your animation without any light object & raytrace effects yet with your fur/hair grass. I smiled using this approach. Are you smiling too? --------------- artarc
