Request: How to do neat meshes when modelling

Hi everyone

 

I tried posting a request in the Discussions forum for hints on producing those neat and beautifull meshes I sometimes come across when looking at other peoples wireframes...

 

I was recomended to move it here instead. Although I am looking for a software independent aproach I am a Max user myself and I´ll try it here instead.

 

Does anyone know about a tut that has directions on how to produce those beautiful, well distributed polygon meshes that you often see when pros do cars and other design objects - but for architectural visualisation instead... dealing with the need for precision and perhaps even CAD referencing.

 

Below is a link to a random pic of a nice well distributed polygon mesh - I want to do my buildings like that - but how?

I assume by looking at that Audi example that the car was modelled with nurbs, probably in a program like Rhino, but maybe Max.

 

That evenly distributed mesh is a function of the nurbs curves that produce a surface that is represented as a clean mesh.

 

I've half-heartedly tried to model with nurbs in Viz3 and Viz4 and found it difficult to learn. But I've heard that the implementation has improved, so I might try again when I upgrade to Max6 soon.

 

There are so many different ways to model objects between box-modelling, subdivision surfaces, patch modelling, lofting, booleans, etc. It's hard to be a master of all of them.

Thanks - Yeah, you are of course right - it is Nurbs modelling, and I guess thats why it looks like that in this example. I´ve done some tuts on Nurbs modelling but it didn´t stick... I guess I should give it another shot.

I am still hoping that there might be someone out there who has a neat process when doing architectural visualisation and modelling - and that they might be willing to share it. That Railway station tutorial for example ( http://www.3dtotal.com/team/tutorials/jozef/jozef1.asp )- that also had som great tips for keeping the mesh nice...

 

How about you Colin - do you do nice meshes with box modelling/subdivision etc. If so would you tell me a little about your aproach?

Anyway - I´m not sure I completely understand the lingo

 

I think i know what boxmodelling and Nurbs is - what are the others - does someone have a comprehensive list of methods with short explanations?

Thats just beautiful. Thanks a lot - its exactly what I´m looking for ... almost there... How about the same but with an architectural model with a sensible workflow back and forth between ACAD and MAX (or similar) - ?

 

The Fiat tut is fantastic in itself though. Thanks to you and of course Karabo Legwaila.

Well, ok, so I'm not totally sure how they modelled that audi, but my main point was that they are not using autocad, or simple meshes in Max.

 

Like I said, I really haven't used very much of what I consider advanced modelling methods, becuase most of the buildings I render don't require it. I model most of the rectilinear objects in Acad and then I make anything fancy in Viz with lofts, extruded splines, mesh smoothed objects, etc.

 

Furniture really seams to be the most difficult thing to build and gives me the biggest chance to explore new modelling methods.

 

Anyway, I haven't found any advanced modeling tutorials that were related to architecture. Most of them are for human heads and spaceships. Make sure to keep us informed if you find anything better.
