Wow - LOTS of unread posts...

Well, after many trials and tribulations, I am scheduled to have hand surgery in less than 24 hours.

They will do it as Out-Patient surgery and keep me about 4 hours.

I know I haven't been active on the forum, but there will be no computer activity for me for a minimum of 3-4 weeks (after the surgery). The cut tissue has to heal properly and if I bend my wrists, the tissue won't heal properly and I've been told surgery can't even fix that.

So I have lots of DVDs and books and audio books lined up to keep me company whilst I recover.

As soon as the therapist says I can use the computer, I'll jump back into 3ds!

So, take care everyone and I'll see you on the other side of recovery.

ps: Thanks for the nice card, Jeff.

All the best Joel, the end is within sight!

Take it easy, get a "stress ball" to squeeze while you watch your DVD's. There's a Battlestar Gallactica Season 4 marathon on Sci-Fi Channel this Saturday if you can ;) That should take care of 1 day for you.

I once had surgery on a severed tendon my thumb, as far as pain goes, it's not as bad as you'd think. Get a cushion to prop your hand up above your chest height when you sleep though - if the blood rushes to your hand it just throbs and throbs. Very unpleasant and you'll never get to sleep.

Again, all the best, take care and see you back here soon.

I (unknown to me) broke my wrist in a downhill mtb accident about 4 months ago now. Where it broke wasnt much of a stress point, so I rarely felt it. I knew I banged it, and it was sore - but never felt like anything serious.

Since then, its grown a calcium bump on the inside of my right wrist at the join, which is now making the tendons rub over.. and somedays its agony, and some days its OK. Suprisingly, riding the MTB helps it, but after speaking to a client whos a physio, he said Ill prob need surgey - im delaying it till I have the time to think!

But I understand the intrepidation youre going through. And good to see youre getting it sorted.

Good luck Joel and I wish you a quick recovery. If you still want to check email and browse the net, not 3d), and not use your hands. You should look into Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I've used it and it works pretty well. Once trained you can get about 98% accuracy on typing just by speaking and you can navigate applications too.

Of course having 3-4 weeks away from a computer I have to admit would be a pretty nice thing.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi all...

I've had the surgery and had my first exam by the Surgeon today.

He's very pleased with my recovery.

He said there were no complications during surgery and now it just needs to heal and then I can begin therapy.

He's suggesting 2 more weeks of "Heal Time" following by visits to a physical therapist twice a week for a month.

I have some ugly scars on my wrist (it was a carpal tunnel release and there was a gangleon (google it - it's gross) in there as well. It's basically a lump that was stretching the tendons to hell and back. So he removed the gangleon and 'tied off' the source of the gangleon.

Currently, I can't lift anything heavy (like a cup of tea) and the scars hurt and there's a lot of bruising and swollen areas on my forearm and hand. (Funny the surgeon never mentioned this pre-op)

But everything looks like it'll come together nicely.

I'd like to thank everyone for their kind words of encouragement and well-wishes.

ps: I got more happy pills today! :)

pps: über mega kudos to my wife for putting up when I whinge about pain, and for being my hands the past few weeks.

Hope you don't mind my presumption, but here's a token of appreciation for Mrs. Sandman and her efforts of late, here at CGA...

Good to hear the Op. went so well, Sandman. Work hard at the Hand Clinic - at the very least it's interesting to learn about the engineering marvel that is the human hand, but try to do as much remedial work as you can. I relaxed with mine at the start of recovery because of pain and ended up losing 30% flexion in my thumb - push it as far as you can.
