methodology for construction

I've been using 3ds max at work for about 9 or 10 months now, and I've been doing work for my boss (extruding basic basic BASIC aka generic) structures, or sill plates, and small animations of construction components. I want to start designing real structures aka houses, buildings, etc (something along challenge 4). In any case, what process do people use in creating buildings. right now, I blocked out the basic shape, and now am creating narrow boxes, but this seems really clumsy.

 

here's the basic outline of my first building....HELP!!!

i do alot of stuff with splines and the extrusion modifier. as the design gets more complex, i'll use the slice modifier to cut things up, or boolean (boolean can be very powerful if you know how to track through the sub-object levels and modify your base object and the operand B object). if you want to do more organic stuff, then spline modeling with the surface modifier is a great tool. lofting is really powerful as well when you get into detailing the model. check out the tutorials that Ted Boardman has done for cgarchitect.

Thanks for the help, Sean. I checked out your site and it's very impressive work on there, but man, it's rough navigating through it. But man, that Nforum competition entry is striking.

 

I tried looking through the surface modifyers help (online resources) but they weren't too much help. One of my big problems is in how to extract shapes within shapes.

 

Here's my scenerio. I was thrown in with the lions so to speak in terms of 3ds max. My boss hired me as an intern/graphic guy, and I was upfront about my lack of experience with 3d modeling programs. Thus, I barely touched 3ds max before he said: "screw the tutorials, just try to get these things done asap." So what ended up happening is that I used my autocad methodology to build things. As I had time, I tried a tutorial here and there, but never sat down and did them all. So now, I have a rudamentory understanding of max, but have a bunch of f-ed up way of doing things, and most of them, since the projects I did were for earthquake engineering, involved basic shapes (shear walls, reinforced concrete walls, let-in braces, strongbacks, etc).

 

I WANT TO EXCEL in 3ds max, both to help my portfolio for grad school in Architecture from an undergrad in music (appyling to grad-school as we speak) and more importantly, for my own benefit; I feel like I'm on crutches when I use 3ds max, ie doens't feel natural.

 

Enough whining. I just wanted to explain my situation to you. So my current concern is in how to extrude walls and windows within them. For instance, if I create a spline, and then extrude it, how do I extrude within the new shape. In other words, how do I create more segments within shapes?

I think you have to set up a real excercise, model your room, or your office, you will find that in each case you can use different techniques, and you will be better at some.

 

sometimes i use xtruded splines for walls that don´t have windows, other times i use boxes, other times i use splines with attached splines in elevation view.

speaking of doing real exercizes, I did this last week. It's still a WIP (actually have a thread going here , but I'll post the most up to date pic, here as well.

 

I know that I need more secondary bounces, and it looks like there's too much color bleeding, but it's a start.
